I'm currently in the market for an SSD which I plan to clone everything except my games to from my current 1tb hard drive. I'm looking at WD Black M.2 since they are pretty cheap but Centrecom (a hardware store in Australia) has it in NAND and Newegg has it in NVMe. Can anyone explain what the difference is between the two and if they'll both work in the same port?

Can anyone also recommend a solution for cloning Windows and programs to the SSD?

Thank you.

1) That's like asking what the difference is between a car with wheels and a car with apple car play.

They literally are two different things.

All SSDs have nand.

NVME is the type of controller.

2) Do not clone, unless you enjoy having windows issues and then having to wipe everything in the future.

Do a clean install properly, don't take the lazy way out.

So NAND and NVMe are pretty much the same thing?

So you recommend that I just install Windows and the programs clean onto the SSD and forget cloning it?

What system do you have? Not all work with the wdblack drives as not all work with pice drives.

No...........................

Why would a wheel and car software be "pretty much the same thing"

I literally just said they are completely different things.

One is a type of memory chip and the other is a controller interface.

Maybe post the link to the two SSDs you're looking at and we can check if it's the same SSD.

And yes, please just clean install windows and programs, you will save yourself a bunch of headaches.

One is sata and the other is NVME.

You need to pick one that works with your motherboard.

Some motherboards only have sata enabled M.2 slots, others have PCIe M.2 slots which work with NVME.

Some have both.

NAND (for NAND Gate) flash is a type of flash memory. Most flash memory storage is NAND. The other is NOR flash.

NVMe is a communication protocol to speak to a storage device. This does not necessarily mean it's flash memory.
