Hi. I want to know a few things about this headphone. Why is it so popular? Is the earcup deep? And is it good for say FPS?

An amazing quality pair of headphones with well-rounded performance

that outperforms many other pairs of headphones

all at a very reasonable price point of around 100 USD on sale.

Earcup isn't very deep, relies on the cushioning material instead, maximum comfy.

Since it's just stereo (I think), it'll be okay for any 3D game.

Not as good as hardware 5.1/7.1, but it's still great.

What do you mean it relies on cushioning material instead?

So if deep earcup means what I think it means,

it's like your entire ear is wrapped in the cup, right?

but when I wear the 50s, the cushioning on the cup doesn't really wrap around my ear

it  just rests on it, but the cushioning is soft enough that you don't feel the underlying plastic/aluminum

so it's really good for long usage periods

A deep cup headphone would be like those fancy Bose QCXs that insulate your entire ear (my interpretation).

So they are over ear heaphones but are on ear? I'm confused...

It so popular because the frequency response is flat. It does not "color" the audio by amplifying it. Thus it provides a very balanced sound for music. Games? I don't know about that because I have only listened music on it. Someone here could perhaps write their gaming experiences.

Every headphone colors the sound.

The frequency response is far from flat on the M50. It's just advertised as studio monitoring headphones, which it's not. They have a good amount of bass, and mids are recessed a bit. I find treble is somewhat lacking too. Not a bad headphones for rock and metal if one can get them for $100 or less.

I think you'll find it is one of the least flat studio headphones out there, where the senns 555, 600 and 650 are slightly flatter:

EDIT: In fact flat response headphones are an acquired taste if you are not engineering or musicianing.  The reason they are popular is because they have a pronounced bass response and a pronounced 11Khz response which gives the sound a lot of presence. In general headphones with a flat response are not quite as popular, think of 7506, v6 and HD280pro.
