Movie storage

Hello everybody, my dad and I are renovating our basement, and we have a combined total of way too many movies (dvd, blu ray, blu ray uhd/3d) and we are trying to get all of our movies on to a 12tb hard drive on a media center of ours, for personal use of course! I have 3 year old brothers who have already distroyed a bunch of movies we are looking everywhere to try and find an easy way to complete this task and save our movies, especially the Disney ones which is one of the main reasons my dad had me do this, since they are encoded with a piracy block, and those are the most broken.

 

Any tips are appreciated! Thank you for your time

This is questionably legal territory. You're not suppose to rip videos/music off the disks, at least with the intent to distribute. If you're doing it for personal viewing convenience then it's a grey area AFAIK.

 

To answer the question (kind of) you'd need disk players capable of reading the disks. CD/DVD/BD readers are fairly cheap but I have no personal experience successfully reading a BD video off the disk to create a digital copy.

 

The answer is pretty self explanatory otherwise. Read each video from a cd/dvd/bd reader, create the digital copy, copy to the 12TB disk. Some software may be required but we cannot discuss that because again this is a grey area of legal. (At least in the US)

I recommend Makemkv for DVD's and Blu rays to obtain the lossless video file.

 

It also good to have another ripping software like AnyDvd HD or DVDFAB if Makemkv's encryption hasn't been updated for new releases.

 

Also for a Netflix's style server I recommend Plex, easy to organise your media and support for multiple devices.

You could just use hand brake to do it. But you need to install a .dll file to allow it to read DRM content.

Make MKV can do Blu Rays.

 

But you have to have an activated version, but it's free as long as it is in beta, but you have to go on a spesific place on the forum and get a new key every few months.

 

Btw in my country Ripping Blu Rays is basically a grey area.

To answer the question (kind of) you'd need disk players capable of reading the disks. CD/DVD/BD readers are fairly cheap but I have no personal experience successfully reading a BD video off the disk to create a digital copy.

 

The answer is pretty self explanatory otherwise. Read each video from a cd/dvd/bd reader, create the digital copy, copy to the 12TB disk. Some software may be required but we cannot discuss that because again this is a grey area of legal. (At least in the US)

We are not going to distribute, we are doing it to store our movies and save space

It also good to have another ripping software like AnyDvd HD or DVDFAB if Makemkv's encryption hasn't been updated for new releases.

 

Also for a Netflix's style server I recommend Plex, easy to organise your media and support for multiple devices.

You're entitled to copy your media disks for archival purposes. What you're not entitled to do is stripping the DRM or encryption that came with it. That's the jist of it anyway in the US.

 

I believe MakeMKV can do normal Blu-Ray, but I don't know if it can do UHD Blu-Ray. Not to mention you need an actual UHD Blu-Ray drive as normal Blu-Ray drives can't read it (it's dumb, I know)

Pretty much this.  As an example, in Canada, 'Format Shifting' is legal and does not violate copyright law, UNLESS you have to defeat encryption or DRM to do so.  But let's be frank, if someone actually OWNS these discs and just wants to literally make more accessible backups, who cares?  I think no one will disagree that ideologically it's not piracy.  The only concern would be mods who need obey the letter of the law.

 

Of course, some DVDs or BluRays do not FEATURE encryption so this would not violate any copyright laws where Canada is hosted.  So maybe just don't bring up encryption in this thread. You can use MakeMKV to make a copy or remux of a non-encrypted BD no problem too. :)
