8600k is faster in games, but with mixed results in encoding videos.

agreed, they are a horse a piece for all core performance, even overclocked.

Its always nice to have 12 threads, but then again for gaming 8600K is second only to 8700K. Even when its 100% usage, still outputs more FPS than Ryzen.

 

For encoding, if the codec implementation is capable of 12 threads, you should get marginally better performance with AMD.

In the other hand, if the software is retarded or runs on few cores (after effects) Intel should get a comfortable 20% advantage with ease.

 

Im asuming both rigs overclocked to a reasonable OC of 4.7 the i5 and 3.9 the ryzen 3000mhz RAM, etc.

 

Between both today id buy the i5.

A different story would be if it were a Ryzen 1700 agains the 8600K. Encoding highly benefits from extra threads, and gaming impact on the 1% and .1% is not that massive in Ryzen. (I add this, because where i live, the 1700 is only 10% more expensive compared to 8600K thus easier to call).
