Why can’t my iPhone 7plus Camera focous on the moon

Interesting, it might just be a fault with the camera or a technical limitation.

 

My phone camera can't focus on the moon either, or even stars....

It should switch to infinite focus if you focus on the sky... But you won't be able to get clear pictures of the moon on your phone, the sensor is too small and the moon is (usually) too small in the sky. All that plus if you're taking a picture of a dark sky your camera will use a really long exposure time, so any picture you take without a tripod will be shaky and blurry.

 

EDIT - if you can use manual controls and a tripod, you might be able to take a clearer picture of the moon with an exposure time of five or six seconds. But it's still so small that you won't get much detail, same with stars.

My phone has 2x but if I bought

I don't know how scope powers work, only focal length in mm, but yes it would make the moon bigger. You'd still need a tripod and a phone tripod mount for pictures to be clear, though.

Even on DSLRs, autofocus can be a pain in the arse when it's dark.
