How to get raspberry PI to output video via 3.5mm jack

So I already have a cable like this

but I don’t know how to get it to output via the 3.5mm jack instead of HDMI (PI 3). Thanks for the help.

To the OP, I think you need to modify the config file on your Pi so it defaults to composite video out instead of HDMI. Look that up in google, I'm sure there is a good guide made already.

OP also needs to make sure the cable is wired the right way. A bunch of camera cables are flipped and I found the only ones to work are Zune cables and Apple iPod cables.

It is NOT possible to output video via the 3.5mm jack, if your TV has only component input, you will have to use HDMI to component converter. The 3.5mm jack is able to output audio only.

That's... not possible. 3.5mm jacks are designed for audio output, not video output. I could see how it could be done in theory but it's not at all practical.

The 3.5mm jack on a Raspberry Pi can be configured for audio or for composite video.

Just copied this from something I found on google incase you still haven't gotten in working:

 

  1. First, set up your connections of Raspberry Pi with the keyboard and monitor. Make sure they are correctly set up. Now plug in your SDHC card in the Raspberry Pi slot. Power on the TV/Monitor and make sure that the TV/Monitor is on AV.

  2. Next thing is to power on the Raspberry Pi and when you see RED LED is on, hold down the SHIFT key until the Green LED stops flickering on the Raspberry Pi.

  3. Now if you don’t see anything on the display, then try pressing 1, 2, 3, 4 keys on the keyboard one by one. This should really do the trick. “1” to select output to the HDMI which is by default. “2” to select output to “Safe HDMI”. “3” is for composite PAL. “4” is for composite NTSC. If it still doesn’t, then try unplugging and replugging the power source and follow step 1 to 3 again.

  4. Now once it is displaying the output, you should see the noobs menu like shown below.

The biggest issue is that AV through TRRS is not standardized. According to https://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2014/07/raspberry-pi-model-b-3-5mm-audiovideo-jack/, the sleeve/ring farthest from the tip is the video output, and some may wire it to the second furthest the tip.

 

So you may not be getting video output because you have the wrong type of TRRS AV connector. You might be lucky in that they may have swapped the outputs around, like in the camcorder pinout. All you'd have to do there is swap the connection to the display respectively.
