Even SATA I is fast enough for an HDD.

The only thing to keep in mind is the cost of electricity is going to be much higher to run that server than something new.

Let me ask you this question, do you like jet engines and loud noises? Or do you have a very out of the way, not near anybodies bedroom, place to store it?

Two words.

What's your budget, how much storage are you looking for?

Well just to put it into perspective, I had the same case and I started going crazy from the noise so I had to toss it out.

Those 5 80mm fans and the server PSUs are crazy loud. I even tried replacing the fans and it didn't make a dent in the noise. Modding the chassis to take a standard ATX PSU helped a bit but it's still VERY loud. Like 50 to 70 dBA loud and about 40 dBa loud 15 feet away through a wall and thick noise dampening material.

If you'd like to have a plex server I could also suggest you using an used PC that has at least an i3( i5/i7 will be better tho' ) and some good storage. In this way you'd be able to use the PC as a server and spend less than 200$ for this.

Problem with these is with the current parts is your limited to 2tb drives, so you need new raid cards if you want drives over 2tb.

Id also put a new motherboard + cpu in as those old ones will be power hungry and slow.

i would for a company that deals with a lot of WD purple HDD and when we have RMA that get returned i send them back to WD and get the replacements case there still under warranty and my boss lets me keep them. so im sitting on 14 4TB WD purple and 1 6TB wd purple and 1 8tb WD gold.

What OS and file system are you using? the best way to do this is probably a dell h200 or similar(there just rebranded lsi cards and cheaper than the lis versions) And a sas expander. Or just get 3 h200.

Id also get a new board. Depending on how much transcoding and ram, a dual 1366 or dual 2011 or single 115x would work well here.

Yea for unraid you want the hba's then, not a raid card. This system will work fine with unraid once you put new hba's in (about 100-140).

You want a hba like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PERC-H200-6Gb-PCI-e-SAS-SATA-8-Port-Raid-Controller-9210-9211-8i-047MCV/172981732523?hash=item284683c4ab:g:39YAAOSwsYpaS32g

Cpu is fine for unraid and a nas. Don't expect much transcoding and it will be power hungry.

These are nice and cheap for the number of drives. Won't be silent, but not horrible and works fine in a closted.

This is another situation where, unless you have the specific use case and space and such for a rack, it's about 10x smarter to just build a NAS PC with a large case that can accomodate lots of drives.

This thing?  I keep it in my BEDROOM. The only noise it makes is the stock Intel cooler running at lowest speed, the three AF140L fans, and the occasional and subtle click or grind of hard drives.

And now I'm like 'I wonder if passively cooling an i5 2300 is possible?'
