Which processor should I go for next?

My current CPU is i7-3770.

If at all I plan to replace my CPU which one it should be - i5-8400 or i7-8700?

I use PC for gaming and casual programming

Go for the i7 8600k, it sits in the middle ground, and you will be able to overclock it, just make sure to get a good air cooler.

I recommend if you OC that 8600k you get something like the H100i rad cooler version 2

I like the H100i (got a great deal in the classifieds on it) but a good cheaper air cooler will work just a fine.

I would buy the 8700 out of those 2 options.

But I doubt if upgrading from a 3770 is really that necessary.

If you can afford a decent AIO liquid cooler with the 8700k, go for it but I'd recommend the 8700 non k as it is still as powerful but cannot have a bump in performance like the K series chips.
