Question about RAID

For example, if i have 4 500gb m.2 ssds, can i pair it up with one 2tb m.2 ssd and ‘do’ raid 5?

Or is it better to go for raid 6?

 

Also, is the 8700K good enough for m.2 raid? I’m a little confused with Pcie lanes as well. thx!

Well, you can start with step 1: don't do raid and just back up your data

Yes you can mix sizes, but it will use the size of the smalles drive on all disks.

 

What are you trying to do? Normally id stay away from raid and get a single bigger drive.

With a 8700k normally a pcie storage uses the 24 pcie lanes from the chipset, so you will still have full use of the pcie 16x link to your gpu.

 

Riad 5/6 use striping to split up data and then make a parity so you can lose some of those stripes.

 

 

What are you trying to do? Normally raid isn't a good option, and it seems like you should get a single bigger faster drive.
