Did my cat kill my GPU

Koka458

Short question - Can the static electricity discharge from cat kill GPU?

So I can't get over the fact that my GPU died months ago, so I'm trying to find out all the possible ways that could have happened.

I've asked this here before and you guys said it could be the faulty PSU and I slightly don't believe it, just "slightly".

Another theory : The time it died I was running the PC in a work/tech station kind of way for "reasons". The PC was just lying on the table and was working fine for few weeks.

Cats like warm things so obviously she's going to stay around touching warm stuff.

So the real question - did the static electricity discharge from my cat killed the GPU? She "shocks" me sometimes.

Open bench is a great way to kill any electronic part unless its in a controlled environment.  It does not sound like your environment was controlled. xD

Static electricity discharge or electrostatic static discharge (ESD) can kill computer hardware. However, in my time working in IT repair, I haven't had this issue. It is a possible option.

Definitely possible. Could also be she scratched it, bent it, or something else like that. Or the PSU

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

If I had a dollar for every time I picked up a PC at a yard sale and found that a cat had somehow managed to piss inside of it...I'd have four dollars!

$3 is the kiss of death for me. Four cat piss PCs, paid $3 for three of them (got the fourth for free).

So, yes, pussies can own your GPU. And I mean that in every sense you think I do.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

That wasn't a cat, that was me. I like marking my territory.

Why do you have such a thing for old ladies and their PCs?

only some electronics can get spoilt by static electricity. One of the things that board manufacturers can do is test for static discharge with a special tool that can provide a high voltage static

usually with computers you just long press the power button as its connected to a PSU without being plugged in to discharge the board (The PSU is needed for this)
