I’ve been stable with a 970 gtx for years.  I finally got a 1080 founders at retail from Best Buy.  When I swap in this card and reinstall drivers everything seems fine.

When putting the card under load it settles around 78-80C and then after a short while my screen is distorted and frozen with pink and green checker box pattern and the PC eventually reboots.

Windows 10 event logs just show unexpected shutdown.

I’m trying to see if you think I should rma or return the card.  Since if I return it I will likely not be able to get another for a while since they are sold out.  But rma’img a card I’ve owned for less than 24 hours seems absurd.

I put the 970 back in and everything is fine.

DDU  Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 17.0.7.8

Then install latest driver for your card from nvidias website... you might need to download this first.

is there any chance the shop has a 1-to-1 replacement for the first week or so?

it kinda looks like a problematic card to me but you should reinstall the drivers first according to paddy-stone's link, considering they're both different cards with different architecture

Rest of specs:

Intel Core i7-4790K (at stock)
Z97-A/USB 3.1  (BIOS updated to latest 2801)
EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
PG279Q (G-sync enabled, running at 144Hz)

Obliterating the drivers with DDU and reinstalling seemed to have no noticeable effect on the problem.

So, have you turned up the fan? Not saying this is a solution but could narrow down an issue to be addressed for rma.

Yes I have 2 PCI Express 3.0, but I think it would be single at x16 or dual at x8/x8.

That doesn't matter what so ever.

ouch I usually have that as sign as gone but

have you reseated the card?

Yes, I've re-seated it several times now.  It's fine until a few minutes or so under load.  Then it does the above, locks up the system, then automatically reboots.  Unfortunately, windows logs have nothing recorded of importance and gpu-z reports seem pretty normal.

Its damaged. Take it back and tell them to hold the next one for you. Or just get the money back.

Figured you could have just talked to a manager about it and tell them you want one of the next ones that come in. Takes them for ever though. Always out of mice and keyboards I need. I prefer NVidia cards too but I never get there in time to get them.
