Cell Towers

I've been reading a lot about cell networks, towers, transceivers, etc recently. It got me thinking: If a hacker was able to spoof a cell tower or create an mitm cellular access point, could the hacker potentially use that to get free or anonymous service by piggybacking off of of people connecting to the rogue ap? For example, when creating a fake wireless access point, people will connect to your computer first, then the intended network, which allows you to spoof their ip and Mac address or even poison their dns cache to divert them to fake websites. Could this potentially be achieved on a cellular network?

Yep. The [insert your favorite government agency here] has used such "towers" to locate and spy on individuals in the past. Of course it also has the small side effect of collecting 100s of innocent peoples data at the same time...

Yeah I read stuff about the [inset your favorite 3 letter govvernment acronym here] using them to take information... My concern was less interested in intercepting data than using them to spoof a legitimate users details. For example, a rogue cell tower where the hackers sees somebody connect with a phone number (let's say 123-4567) could that hacker spoof that phone number and make a call from his own equipment while the call is still registered to the victims phone service?

Ummm.. Scammers and Telemarketers spoof numbers all the time. Hell, people have been called from their own number before according to caller ID entries. Due to them spoofing numbers it makes it hard for organizations like the FTC to enforce the "Do not Call list". 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Yeah it's pretty cheap to build one too. Police have them everywhere. They slap them on single engine civilian planes to spy on people all the time. Look up IMSI catcher or Stingray

it's possible to be spoofed but I haven't seen any widespread fraud by making a fake cellular network. As far as I know, the SIM card authenticates with the real wireless carrier through a handshake of some sort so even if an attacker was able to create a fake 700 MHz LTE network, the smartphone will still connect to the real carrier's 700 MHz LTE.

They use these devices all the time. If you go to Washington DC and go near any major building you will see these things pop up. French police are doing it too
