how much should i spend on second hand 970 ?

No more than $180 USD.

Overall, the two are close performance wise. Even though the 970 is more power hungry (Usually requiring an 8-pin and a 6-pin power), that is a minor concern for most.

I'd recommend for you to buy a 970 used It should be quite a bit cheaper.

Fan Comparisons          F@H          PCPartPicker         Analysis of Market Trends (Coming soon? Never? Who knows!)

Designing a mITX case. Working on aluminum prototypes.

Open for intern / part-time. Good at maths, CAD and airflow stuff. Dabbled with Python.

Normally, the 1060 6GB, as it performs on par with the 980 and uses less power. Right now, the cheaper one.

The 1060 has the performance of a GTX 980, not 970.

Volta and Navi are coming out this year just wait. If you can’t wait, what are you paying for the GPUs and what are you doing on the card.

Surely 128 shaders can’t make that much of a difference. Also, at the boost clocks, does the performance difference set the 1060 3GB a little higher?

not really, 2% and 3fps isn't something you'd notice all that much.
