Low fps on overwatch but not using all of hardware

tehx

you my friend, have just witnessed the glory of a cpu bottleneck. once you get past 100fps, your gpu has to wait on the cpu to catch up. the only way to get around this is by overclocking your cpu.

But my CPU is only at 60%

that doesn't mean anything. my ryzen 7 1700 only hits 20-30% at most when I'm gaming, and my gpu usage will drop anyway. the big contender here is single threaded performance. overwatch only uses two cores, and leverages two other threads slightly when those are used up. the only way to increase your framerate is by increasing the amount those two cores can handle. and the only way to do that, is by overlclocking.

Overwatch uses more than 2 cores lol

i can use more than 2 cores, but it does not leverage equally among all 4 of them. if you open resource monitor while you are gaming, you will notice that cpu 0 and cpu 1 will be pegged 70-100% while the other cores will only reach 20-30% at most, this is because it is not optimized to effectively use all the cores equally.

Okay I take your word for it. I am going to overclock my cpu now hoping to see a increase in performance. I have seen people on yt have 7700ks and not dip below 144fps

yeah just make sure you do it safely. hopefully you have a decent cooler and a good board. make sure to do plenty of research first.

Just overclocked to 5ghz no noticable difference. This is bs I've seen people stay above 144 with their i7s

not all games are optimized to use all 8 threads, i'd say 60-80% is normal. It's the same thing for 8600k/8700k, just means u can actually download or watch stuff in the background without dropping frames.

I would agree with you but I can't as I have seen other people get 99gpu usage with no frame drops on 7700k

do the other poeple use the same speed of RAM? As you mentioned you dont see any FPS increase when overclocking, are you sure that you arent bandwidth limited? RAM speed does matter alot for minimum FPS...

Don't listen to thoes fools, ur obviously gpu bottlenecked if ur around 96 percent

if you take overwatch seriously turn settings Down to low and resolution scale set to 100 not auto 100

trip buffer off

vsync off

and u will be doing 270 fps

how do I know ?

i get 270 fps with a 1070 and a 1700x (the supposedly worse gaming chip)

-13600kf

- 4000 32gb ram

-4070ti super duper

It’s not a CPU bottleneck most likely. Epic settings will hit the limits of a 1070. If you’re playing on Epic settings, that would be why. Set it to Ultra and enjoy that delicious ~180-200 FPS average.

Epic and Ultra look almost identical; in screenshots I can’t tell a difference.

(Also Overwatch is highly multithreaded, despite the earlier claim. It’s why the game, on Ryzen, runs pretty much on par with Intel.)

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

CPU: Intel i7 8700K @4.9 GHz/1.315v

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A

This guy has 1500mhz ram and has no issues

No difference in ultra, still 70 max cpu and gpu is now 60 max

Its double data rate, so he is using DDR4-3000 CL15. (not so bad)

But he is also playing on a 1440p Monitor and a GTX1080.

dont know, what are you running?

to get an idea of what the hell im talking about watch this:

Your GPU could be clocked lower or thermal throttling, or your windows could be just a bad install, could be everything. But if you cheaped out on memory it is possible that its slowing your pc down aswell.

The memory was not cheap, 2400mhz Corsair Vengeance 8gb $80

well i can imagine that you are leaving some fps behind in terms of minimum FPS in extremely CPU bound games, sweetspot for price to performance is DDR4-3200 CL14/15.

But i cant tell if this is the reason for your Overwatch problem. I dont even play that game.

EDIT:

From a quick googling session, i would say RAM speeds matter alot for Overwatch.

Maybe you should try to Overclock your RAM to test it.
