Budget Graphics Cards

So I'm starting this thread just for the discussion of older hardware that still has life left in it. I'm trying to make a super cheap build as a challenge to see what old hardware still can hold its own at say low 1080p settings, in particular graphics cards from the GT 2/4/6 gens is what I'm aiming for. Paired with say a Q6600 and 4-8gb of DDR2. What old cards do you feel can still hold their own a little when others may pass them off as 'dead and buried?'

gtx 680 or 780

ask me about your system builds, AIO's, CPU's, PSU's, and GPU's.

How cheap specifically?

Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.9 Ghz  | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 |  PaliT GTX 1050Ti  |  8gb Kingston HyperX Fury @ 2933 Mhz  |  Corsair CX550m  |  1 TB WD Blue HDD

Inside some old case I found lying around.

Maybe you could find an nvidia 670 for cheap (around 70$).

With my 760 I can play PUBG just fine with low medium settings with an Intel 4690 at stock, plus Heartstone and Paladins just fine maxed out on 1080p.

A Q6600 is a pretty hefty bottleneck so I'm not sure how the two would fare in today's gaming.

  • 3 weeks later...

I actually found a GT 1030 used for £45, which ended up surprisingly good for budget gaming on reasonable settings. For those who can't get hold of a 750ti and want something modern that can pull it's weight and is just a bit more expensive than the GT 710 i'd really recommend it if you can find it cheap.

GTX 670 will outperform the C2Q by a fair margin (cpu bottleneck).

Ive got one in a system with dual E5440's (effectively C2Q 9650's) and the CPUs are what kills gaming performance where the 670 can play anything current at 1080p in a modern system.

I'd go for a 650 Ti/660 if you can get one.
