No sign of life when ram isnt installed?

Hi everyone, 

 

this is a pretty straight-forward question:

Is it normal that the fans don't spin when ram isnt installed? 

 

This is my first PC-Build and I have everything I need, but the ram cards. I know that ram is a must-have for booting but I turned on the psu anyways in hope that anything would blink or bleep or the fans would start spinning, but no. 

 

Psu is fine, btw. I tested it.

The answer is yes and no. 

 

It really depends on the hardware. Some motherboards try to boot up and throw the "who am I? wheres my memory?" error, other won't budge...

 

Or for example there are PSUs that fire up for a few seconds after you plug them in... so your whole machine (if rgb is inside) lights up, fans spinning, shutting down a few seconds later.

Main System:

Anghammarad : Asrock Taichi x570, AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @4900 MHz. 32 GB DDR4 3600, some NVME SSDs, Gainward Phoenix RTX 3070TI

 

System 2 "Igluna" AsRock Fatal1ty Z77 Pro, Core I5 3570k @4300, 16 GB Ram DDR3 2133, some SSD, and a 2 TB HDD each, Gainward Phantom 760GTX.

I have a MSI B350M motherboard, that has "error-leds" built in but I think the problem is that my bequiet! pure power 10 psu doesnt even try to fire up. I have no idea why that could be the case because as I said before, the psu works when shorting it with the "paperclip trick".

If you already have placed the hardware in its casing, get it out, lay down the motherboard on the box it came in, put in ram, cpu, gfx card, plug in everything but a HDD/SSD, then try to start it. Just to make sure there isn't a short anywhere.

 

If it then doesn't start, either the PSU or the Board are dead.

Some boards try to boot, some detect no RAM and don't. 

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
