iPhone 8 issue

So I got a iPhone 8 new when it came out and it’s been a problem since day 1, my phone screen will not shut off or auto time out on it’s own. The only way is to press the sleep button to shut the screen off.

 

in the settings auto time out is ON and I have tried it on the lowest time setting to the highest and it just never turns off. 

 

I forget got to shut the screen off a lot and it just drains my battery when that Happens.

 

restarts don’t fix it. Even a hard restart or force restart whatever you call it

 

ios version HAS been updated regularly.

Did you ever factory reset the phone? Is there some app that doesn't allow it to go to sleep? Does the issue occur when the phone is completely restored and then turned on without having downloaded ANY apps or having changed ANY settings?

Enter DFU mode and hookup to your Mac or PC and select restore in iTunes.

 

This will wipe the iPhone's internal SSD and reinstall iOS from the internet. 

 

You may backup if you like but your backup might contain the error and if you restore the error you will be back at square one.

So it has to be a glitch or error in the software?

Nothing hardware related should prevent the phone form turning the screen off automatically.

It's either a glitch, a setting in the settings app, or a setting you missed in some other app that forces it to stay on. It's stupidly unlikely that it's a hardware issue.

I don’t feel like restoring my phone at least not right now, I’ll look alrind more but I’m guessing that’s what I need to do to fix it

If auto lock does not work there is nothing else you can do outside of a reset or restore. 

 

Depending if you have anything to backup the whole process should only take less than 15min or so.

Some apps can block auto lock. Logitech's Harmony App will prevent it from locking if the app is open -- not knowing what he has running on the phone makes it impossible to say for sure that there isn't some app or setting that needs to be changed somewhere.

Unless the app developer figured out how to break the sandbox that only works if the app is open and in the foreground.

I would get with Apple and see if they will fix it for you or replace it. I would find that to be more worth it than doing it yourself because if Apple messes something up when reinstalling IOS, they will give you a brand new phone for free.

I haven't ever done it. But if it is something wrong with the phone (though I don't know what hardware issue it could be) then Apple will just give you a new iPhone 8 for free.

They're still going to make him restore it first anyway (after making sure he didn't miss the setting), so he may as well try that before wasting time going to the Apple store.

I agree that he should try resetting it and change any setting he can to get it working, however, I wouldn't do anything that could have even a slight risk of permanently damaging his phone. All my opinion, do whatever you feel best.
