lie about monitor size. Legal?

So after buying new 38" monitors and measuring my old ones I noticed something, why do they advertise them as 34/38? On their website LG said the 38" is actually 35 under specs, not 38. Even measuring my 34" bezels and all only turns out to be like 32 and on the site it says 32.2. So why lie? Fale advertising?

typically monitors.  and TVs for that matter.  are measured on the diagonal.  so diagonally its 38inches.  and thats screen size, and doesn't include bezels IIRC.

 

Edit - this may translate to 34 inches wide and say 28 inches tall, for example.

Also it is common for televisions to sell as a 32" class or the like, meaning they aren't exactly that size but consider it the same.

I came into this thread already thinking 'I bet the OP doesn't know that displays are measured on the diagonal' and yuuuuup, I was right.

Weird, I thought it was just common knowledge that they're measured that way.

IIRC on their website they have it listed as 37.5" in brackets.

Exactly! It just makes the most sense. If you measure diagonally, you'll always get the same size. If you measured length, which length is it? Even if everyone decided on the same one, you could have tv's saying they're 85"...but they're only 4 inches wide.

By the surface area of the panel in square centimeters?  They'd sound exponentially larger with each small increase in size.  That's marketing gold! :3

ok now I see. I went back to the ebay listing and it did say "diagonal" in it. I just ignored that part of it and read the "lg 38"

or... I just ignored what was in the () not like it would matter. there is no "real" 38" out there anyway.

To be fair, everything is measured in diagonal measurements. And has been for a very long time.
