I probably wouldn't after 2 years with win 10

Support is the big question - it may cause some devices to not function properly anymore. Thats what i meant with headaches

so should i upgrade to windows 10 or not and if i do will my laptop support it or no

it will support Windows 10 no problem. 10 is much more alike to 7 in how it works, so i would definitely go for Win10 over Win8

Get the one that you feel most comfortable with. There's no point in choosing one if you don't personally take the time to try each one out.

I'd say Windows 10 since it has some of the least costly effects and, when Game DVR is off, runs just a bit better than 7. The only issue is the seasonal updates that you should make images of before trying to install them.

I prefer 8.1 and the Metro interface since I have four screens and a touchscreen, but that's me.

I'd personally go with 8.1 out of the three. It was way less buggy on my PC than 7 was, and doesn't force anywhere near as much bullshit on you as 10. You'd just have to get used to the metro UI or use something like ClassicShell to get the Windows 7 style start menu back.

Don't forget that all support of any kind goes belly up on the 31st of December 2017 for Windows 7.  I also believe the free upgrade from Win7 to Win10 also disappears on the 31st.

December 31st is indeed the cutoff date for those who want the free upgrade.  However Windows 7 will still be supported until January 14th 2020.  That's still a whole 2 years.

Considering the Sandy Bridge CPU that the OP mentions in his laptop's specs, I'd say it's 5 or 6 years old already.  The odds of it still being in use in 2 years are relatively small.  Might as well keep it on Windows 7 and buy a new laptop when it breaks or when support for Windows 7 ends.

If it still works in 2020 and the OP doesn't want to pay for Windows 10 or buy a new laptop, switching it over to Linux is always an option too.  Considering the specs, I kinda doubt that the OP uses it for heavy gaming anyway.

Windows 8.1 is much faster than 7 or 10. I’d go with it.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2
