Upgrade my laptop to a gaming rig

Intel vs AMD for the future

  1. 1. I'm currently having an MacBook Air, which is really shitty. So I'm going to build a new rig to play games and probably some light productivity. I already have 2 GTX 1070s around, so I just need to choose the CPU. I'm confused by all of the leaks and reviews. Which of these 5 options that you will choose for the future? Help!

    • Go for an Ryzen 5
    • Go for i5 Coffee Lake
    • Buy a new MacBook Pro and a Razer Core, use the Thunderbolt 3 port to plug my GTX 1070 in. LOL.

    • Wait for Ryzen 2.

    • Wait for Coffee Lake Refresh/ Cannon Lake or Ice Lake 10nm.

Hi all,

I have MacBook Air, but it's slow as hell and can't keep up with my needs now. So I'm going to build a new gaming/light productivity rig. I already have a GTX 1070 lying around, so no need to care about GPU. I also have 8GB of RAM that I stole from my uncle's desktop. I just need a CPU that can handle my demands. I have a few options available:

1. Get a Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7

2. Get a Coffee Lake i5 or i7

3. Wait for Ryzen 2, which, to my knowledge, is going to be released quite soon.

4. Wait for more Coffee Lake options next year, or Ice Lake 10nm?

5. Buy a MacBook Pro and plug a Razer Core into its Thunderbolt 3 port.

Thank guys. Sorry for the long post.

I recommend selling both 1070s and getting a 1080ti (if you say you have 2).  1 graphics card > 2 anyday. I recommend ryzen 1.0 and going crazy with rgb and stuff

Try using the PSU Tier List!

How to reset the bios/clear the cmos

My current rig:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

Ram: 1x16gb DDR4, 2x8gb DDR4

Storage: 1tb nvme ssd

GPU: gtx 3080

Monitor: 23.8" Dell S2417DG 144hz g-sync 1440p + 27" Acer S271HL 60 Hz 1080p

Keyboard: ducky one I | I SF

Mouse: gpro wireless | glorious model o2 wireless

Sound : beyerdynamic 1990 pro | Monoprice liquid spark (amp) + topping d10 (dac)

You can't beat coffe lake i7 for gaming. Even considering the low PCI lanes count, which amount to nothing gaming wise. It's far tested that even 4x pci 2.0 lanes can feed a Titan Pascal.

If you sell both 1070's you can probaly get a 8700k at least

Yes, but the problem is, in my country Vietnam, we don't have a lot of places to sell pc components, so selling those 1070s is going to be pretty hard. If I decide to sell them then I would have to wait for a while.

That's not at all true.

the 8600k is already being pushed to 100% by some games, and any ryzen refresh with 6c/12t has the potential to put the 8600k in the dumpsters, but of course, to each his own.

You're mixing up the 8600k with the 7600k.  If you've got two 1070's, whatever settings you use are going to be GPU intensive.

uh i own a 8600k, it bottlenecks a 1080 ti in multiple games. the 8700k runs the same game 10fps higher with the 1080 ti on 1440p, sure i can force the 8600k to a higher clock speed but past a certain point (5.1ghz right now) it doesnt make up for the difference. Let alone future games.

And let say ryzen has a refresh at 4.5ghz for 250dollars at 6c/12t (it's a long shot but possible), im gonna be looking to sell the 8600k. (i regret the 8600k purchase)

Forgot to add: i can actually get a asus board, buy a 8700 (non-k) for 339dollars, save on the heatsink, run the 8700 @102*46 and probably outgame a 8600k for less money.

1440p or 1080p depending on the game, i lose 5-10 fps on the 8600k on almost every game.

That explains it.  Usually anyone with a 1080 Ti (or 1070 SLI) is going to be playing at 4K.  In that case, the GPU's will be struggling to keep up, so the CPU doesn't have to work very hard.

the 2 worst ones that actually uses 100% cpu is assassin creed origins and Dragon Age inquisition, other games like wildlands or even older games like witcher 3/metal gear solid 5 is pretty bad too. (i heard shadow of war is just as bad as origins but i dont own that game), havent tried the destiny 2 yet that came with the card either. (i'm just going thru my games on steams and playing a bit of alot of stuff with the new rigs LOL), just cutting it really close with current games.
