Alternative to Charity

virtualTune

Hey Everyone,

I have gotten quite lucky this fall and made fair amount of money. At first I wanted to invest it in my rig like I always do, but to be honest, I came to the conclusion that I really don't need a new GPU or sth. It seems my build is good for now, and next time around I will probably end up building a completely new one.

Since I am in a fortunate situation right now I thought I'd give some away to charity. However, I feel like charity is rather anonymous and doesn't feel much different than if I'd just take it to the bank. So I am looking for some Ideas what to do instead :) I was thinking of giving about 150 bucks.

Mind you I am in Germany ^^

I wish you all a great winter!

How about volunteering at a food bank and at the same time donating some food? You'd get to meet the people there and it would feel much more personal.

I like the idea of the food kitchen.

Where I live we have churches that do a Christmas Dinner for homeless, people in poverty and the elderly/vulnerable. They ask for donations for the food, and volunteers to help serve the food and talk and look after people. These charity dinners aren't anything to do with religious belief, its just that the churches are available and have large rooms and kitchens to provide the service.

Maybe something like this would suit you?

Also massive kudos for you wanting to donate!

charity is charity I'm afraid. the only alternative is to solve the problem that causes people to need charity, and this usually stems from social injustice and government policy.

Here are some of the charities that aren't caused by social retardedness that I support:

local palliative care unit (they are always buying little things to make the last few days of peoples lives as bearable as possible)

Childrens health charities, making the lives of little people who are sick happier (sometimes the families just can't afford nice things like small toys or treats on top of medical expenses)

Public/government Health research (just make sure it is not a pharmaceutical company that will charge an arm and leg for any cure the find) personally I like the cancer research, but there are many more.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

We run this thing called 'Key Club' a.k.a. Kiwanis in our school and basically you can volunteer if charity feels too anonymous and you don't feel like you're helping much. Some of the things you can do are helping out kids who aren't as fortunate as you in Christmas, organizing events or taking part in events such as dance for the mentally disabled, going around raising awareness for things like sign fracture care, being a talk-mate for seniors, or even collecting and recycling bottles from your school/institution if you go to one and donating that to any fund of your choice.

Also, you can always donate to Doctors w/o Borders... what they do and the goal they work for are amazing and you can see what your money was used for.

Basically, you can do anything to help out the unfortunate besides charity; it's not the money - it's about what you do with it.

I like that idea. However as far as I know these shelters are much more common in the States.. I'll ask around, see if there is one in town.

I have wanted to do f@h for a while now. There is nothing that can beef up my machine (in the sig) for 150 bucks. The problem I see here is that most of the time my system is using a lot of resources, so there would be only 15% or so left for folding.
