Is my laptop core overclocked?

Go to solution Solved by m0k,

if your cpu is running mostly at the max turbo speeds that means you either have the power profile set to "High Performance" or you constantly have apps and services running in the background that is hogging your cpu resources

I have a laptop which have i5 7200U with base clock of 2.5 ghz and turbo boost upto 3.1 ghz. My laptop most of the time stays on the turbo boost clock speed. Lately i have been planning to build a pc so did a lil research on the cpu. I know with Intel it happens but is it also with Ryzen cpus. In some sites they say that cpu have a base clock which obviously is least expected clock speed for it out of the box and also say that that desktop cpu have a some turbo speed. So is it that Ryzen cpus also have this feature?

I have never owned an overclocked cpu in my life for your knowledge. So i have no clue about these. Just Saying.

Thanks for answering(if you do). : )

No. Overclocking makes it run higher than the turbo clock

Both Intel and AMD CPUs have a base clock speed and a turbo speed *1.

Both Intel and AMD offer unlocked CPUs while all AMD Ryzen CPUs are unlocked *2.

And no, overclocking is not necessarily the same as turbo boost.

Notes:

*1 - Except Intel Celeron and Intel Pentium

*2 - A B350 motherboard or better is required for overclocking.
