i7 2600k or i5 4460?

Hello!

My friend was thinking about upgrading his CPU from i3 3220 to an i7 2600k or i5 4460, which one should he get? He would get both used. He could buy an i5 4460 and a motherboard with 8 gb of RAM from his another friend for 130-150 € or he could buy the i7 2600k from ebay for about the same price.  He uses his PC for playing games and for video editing. His budget is 100-150 €.

Thank you! :)

It depends on what your friend wants to do, does he want to keep his current motherboard or does he want to build a 'newer' system?

It doesn't matter to him. He just wants the better one for the money

Couldn't be easier: i7 2600k of course. i5 4460 would be completely idiotic.

4th Gen DOES offer a higher IPC than 2nd gen. Of course.

However: The 2nd Gen can be OCed to 4.5 ghz easy, while the 4th Gen will keep running at 3.5~ Ghz (+- 100-200 Mhz, don't know the exact speeds, but it's far from 4 ghz).

With that OC, the IPC on the i7 2600k will be higher, no doubt.

And if that's not enough, the i7 offers Hypert hreading.

No matter how you see it. i7 2600 (especially OCed) > i5 4460 in terms of raw performance.

Let's go even further: Even if you don't consider Overclocking, and let both run at stock. i7 still wins.

Hyperthreading does more, than 5-15% higher IPC.

For Gaming, AND especially for Video editing.

CPUBoss is terrible

Anandtech didn't have the 4460 for compare, but the 2600k and 4670k trade blows, and the 2600k destroys the 4350. Considering the 4350 is closer to the 4460 than the 4670k, the 2600k is probably faster. Then there's the fact that the 2600k can be overclocked while the 4460 can't.

Well what I was going to suggest is...

1) if he wants to keep is current motherboard get the i7 3770 instead (3770 vs 2600K: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-3770-vs-Intel-Core-i7-2600K/1979vs621

2) if he wants to move to a new platform try and find a used B85 board and find a used i7 4770
