I got my Synology DS215j on sale. What I like most is the simplicity, both in hardware installation and the software. It updates on it's own and is accessible from anywhere.

I prefer QNAP myself, generally get better hardware spec for the same price. Software wise both are great.

Adding to leadeaters comment--  unless you can find a Synology product with truly similar specs at a decent savings compared to a QNAP, then get a QNAP.

Anyone used both systems?  Which did you prefer and what were the plus and minus points of each?

(I have a synology 415play myself )

To be honest, they are very similar. Their OS's are almost identical (historically, QNAP would rip-off Synology's interface and features, but these days it's more a back and forth).

Hardware wise, QNAP generally (but not always) gives you a better price for the same hardware (or better hardware for the same price).

Support wise, should be comparable.

Warranty wise, I've found that in the consumer segment, they're pretty much the same. In the small/medium business segment (borderline prosumer), Synology usually offers an extra year over QNAP, but this does depend on the specific series.

At work we've got a pair of QNAP units, and a pair of Synology units.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

iPhone Xr 128 GB Product Red - HP Spectre x360 13" (i5 - 8 GB RAM - 256 GB SSD) - HP ZBook 15v G5 15" (i7-8850H - 16 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD - NVIDIA Quadro P600)

Interesting thanks guys.  I have always suspected there was something special about QNAP.  I review networking hardware and while I have managed to get my hands on a variety of NAS units like Synology, Netgear etc the editors always took the QNAP reviews for themselves.  I have a strong suspicion there are many QNAP review units that found their way to the homes of many magazine editors ;)
