I want to buy an i5 7600K this Black Friday and a new motherboard. I have 16Gb DDR3 RAM and I don't really want to buy new sticks. is the new i5 compatible? if so what motherboards could I get along with it?

Seems like a dumb question but I'm not sure how to figure it out.

No, you need DDR4 RAM.

There were a couple 100 series boards that were DDR3L compatible but that's it. DDR3 is all but dead on the newest platforms.

No it requires the use of DDR4 so you will need to replace your RAM.

ok are there any intel processors that support DDR3 that wont bottleneck a 1070?

The 4790K or the 4690K shouldn't, pair it with a Z97 chipset and you'll be good.

Get the i7 4790k as stated if you already have compatible motherboard or simply wants to reuse your RAM, the i5 7600k is a terrible processor for the cost and in a dead platform, better get the i3 8350k with z370 since it is the exact same 4c/4t processor but better upgrade path.

I mean its cheap and won't bottleneck me, what's wrong?

An 8100 could come close to beating it.

An 8350K or 8400 could definitely beat it out in almost all scenarios.

oh thanks, then why is it an "i3", Isn't that the whole point of the name? lol

It's a quad core processor, and has very similar performance to a 7600K. Intel has changed the lineup a fair but this time around so it's not the same as before.

won't the 2 cores be a drag? I haven't even looked at the i3's because of that.

the i3 8350k is a rebranded 4c/4t i5 7600k.

It isn't cheap it is actually over priced considering the z270 already dead platform high costs still.

4c/4t processors are already on their limit, getting fully 100% max out on many games like BF1, PUGB, Assassins Creed Origins, Watch Dogs 2 and many other titles which has been impacting in a bottleneck on graphics cards equal or higher to a GTX 1070 / 980 Ti, it's minimums are bad and even averages are shitty considering the recent 6 cores processors from both AMD and Intel.

OK thanks, everyone! I think the i3-8350 is the one for me. Thanks for the clarification and everything!

The 8400 costs the same, and you get 2 more cores, which will benefit you. The issue is finding it in stock.

:)
