It can be. It highly depends on your specific use case. If you will be able to take advantage of the extra threads and higher clock speed, then it could depending on the price you are able to get it for. You also need to verify that your motherboard will work with Kaby lake CPUs before you do anything.

wait for next year, a new chipset and cpus will be available from both companies (amd and intel), then you will probably be able to get yourself a better deal

If you were to upgrade, id reccommend the i7 8700K. But only if you need it, that CPU you have is very good.

Do you want to throw money away at Intel? If so, do it.

Gaming Desktop: ASRock Phantom Gaming X, R9-3900x, 64GB RAM, 1.5TB SSD

NAS Box: Gigabyte Z97, i5-4690, 32GB RAM, 22TB, 1TB SSD Cache.

Correct, but if they changed the socket, I will need not only new cpu but new MOBO as well

I'm a BI developer and my task are more cpu intensive and before 2 years ago I bought 6400 because on that time I have only the money for this entry level i5

getting a 4 core right now wouldn't be a wise choice, wait, get some money and invest in something you wont need to change out so quickly
