My ISP provides 100MB or MB per second, but my PC gets only 40Mb per second. How so? (I am using a 1 gigabit Ethernet cable, and I have a fairly up to date router)

How are you testing?

Are they providing you 100MBps or 100Mbps

(The large B is 8x a small b)

Okay - so let's clarify some things here.

 

First things first:

MB = MegaByte (implied "per second", here)

Mb = Megabit

 

Big B = Byte, little b = bit

 

It's an important distinction that people often forget or are simply unaware of.

 

Next: ISP's almost exclusively use Mbps (Or Mb, or Mb/s, or Megabits per second) to measure your rated internet connection. In networking, the connections are almost always described in Megabits (or Gigabits, if fast enough).

 

So, does your ISP provide a 100 Megabit per second connection? Or an 800 Megabit per second (100 MB/s converted into Mbps) connection?

what does your router say in the connection section...

 

for example mine says:

7 - Data rate:	100M/100M
8 - Maximum data rate:	100M/100M

 

and thats exactly what i get

no ISP that I've ever run across sells that exact amount. You'll get "up to", but never exact.

Its impossible to get 40mb/s on a 100Mbps connection. Also most isps don't say that the speed will always be 1 gigabit. But why you need gigabit anyway?

What?
It is possible to get 40mb/s on a 100Mbps connection. Also OP's internet isn't 1 gigabit, the connection between the computer and the router is 1 gigabit. 

 

If your mean it is impossible to get 40MBps on a 100Mbps connection, you are correct. To get 40MBps you would need to be a 320Mbps connection.

Not entirely true, but I would concur that this is common.

 

For example, I pay for 200/10Mbps. What I actually get on a consistent basis is actually 250/15.

Depending on the area. Comcast over provisions speeds by 20%. So if the Comcast network in your area is decent you should see faster speeds than what you pay for.
