Dedicated PhysX card

Go to solution Solved by Titanicium,

Hey guys!! I've been trying to decide what to do with my MSI GTX 550ti OC.

I've tried selling it but to no avail. :(

I cleaned the fans and heat sync, replace thermal paste (Noctua), and even painted the IO shields..

te8y8avy.jpg

So if I can't sell I'd rather just use it.

I don't really pay for power.

Do you guys think using it as a physX card a good idea? :)

1) Use it as a PhysX card :)

2) Fold it to shit :D

3) Mine it to heaven :)

4) Use it as a heater :)

5) See how far you can OC it for fun :)

6) See how far you can throw it of a bridge

The possibilities are endless ;)

if you cant sell it i would use it for physx

if you play alot of physx intensive games you will see a gain, but in most title you wont see a difference,

games that do benefit are borderlands 2 and batman games because they have quite some physx

Throwing it of a bridge isn't the perfect idea either, but it is still a possibility ;)

I wanna fold but I kinda have to turn my PC off when I'm not home..

Can't mine on Nvidia cards. (You can but it would take me decades)

Was able to OC it without further cooling to about 23% above stock. Stable for about 4 days! :D

so throwing away money is ok if its not yours?

Yes because that was not the subject here. You said that throwing it off the bridge would cost him less money, but that is not true if he doesn't pay for it.

Ergo is it not okay, but that wasn't what mattered here anyway.

Well then I would go for the option of using it as a dedictated PhysX card :)

You can use it as a PhysX card but only games that utilize PhysX will benefit from it like Borderlands 2 but if your primary card is a lot faster than the 550 Ti then using it as a PhysX card could actually negatively affect your performance because the 550 Ti wouldn't be fast enough to keep up with your primary card. Aside from that there's the standard points to make about multiple GPU's more heat, more power usage(but it will be minimal unless you're actually utilizing the card because it will be idling) and more noise. You could use it to fold while your gaming, just set F@H to idle and it will start folding with the 550Ti after it idles for a set time, or you could keep it as a backup for your own rig because you never know what might happen. You could also keep it to try to sell it later or use it in another PC for a friend or family member or use it in a media PC. There's no reason to destroy it as it's still useful so if it were me I would pack it back into the box and put it somewhere safe.

- Will it be rendered useless by my 760?

- Imma be doing a gaming run of the Batman series.

- In terms of heat output, I'm not really concerned I have a very well ventilated case. :D

I wouldn't know if there would be a performance hit or not, the best way to find out is to test it. I just mentioned the heat "issue" because pretty much everyone considers it an issue but me. People really blow the "*downsides" to multi-GPU setups out of proportion.

*The issues most people mention about multi-GPU setups are pretty much non-existent

Take it apart to see how a graphics card looks like from the inside, just for fun.

Make badass accessories out of some parts.

Use it as a mug saucer, like Logan from TekSyndicate does.

I did take it apart. As well as an old AGP (FX5400) :D

Accessories is out of the questions

Can't make it a coaster. It's not flat and stable. :/
