Sennheiser vs Audio-Technica

Zadkielle

Well I'm in a tough spot, I got $100 and I'm wondering between the ATH-M40x or the Sennheiser HD 4.30, I can see the sennheiser ones got better characteristics and all, but I've heard many good things about the m40x, any opinion on both??? plus I already got a sennheiser headset for my pc and all, I'd like this ones to be more sort of my all day headset, mostly playing from my phone

I bought the M50x's a while back hearing by all the reviews on how great they were - in my humble opinion they are very over-exaggerated on how great they really are.

They are nice headphones, though I don't find them any dissimilar from a 40$ pair of headphones

yo babe, i think both are good, but your selection is a bit small, and i might consider different options, but with the information you provided i'm not sure what you would like.

could you tell me what you listen to with these headphones?

i mean personally i think headphones need to match what you use them for to get the best out of them

dubstep and jvc sz2000 are a great pair.

where as dubstep and ath m50x is just a disappointment to me. they both do the same thing, but obviously ath m50x ain't got the bass even though it's got more than your typical normal headphone like a beetz.

and so whatever your taste are will be helpful to pick headphones.

I love my ATH-M50x headphones, definitely some of the better premium headphones I have owned. Bias opinion I suppose but their audio quality is better than anything Bose I own including the Quiet Comfort 35's.

For a sub 100$ set of headphones checkout XPT 100's or Brainwaves HM5 they use the driver from some very well known headphones just checkout some reviews on them. They are very neutral sounding, I have the XPT's & a set of Sennheiser HD 558's (Open back) and love both but are very different... the XPT's come with two cords, two sets of ear pads and a nice case well worth the money IMO.

Good luck!

Seriously... I know this is gonna stir the pot, but every positive review I have seen about the M50(x) has been by someone rather unknowledgeable about audio where I can pick holes in a fair bit of what they say, if they say anything worth listening to at all. Most reviewers don't. period. All the reviews I have seen where the reviewer knows about audio and says stuff that makes sense, wind up concluding the M50(x) are less than ideal and recommends you to go buy something else.

As for bose, their stuff is abominable, and they sue reviewers that criticize their products, among other things. As a result, most reviews are neutral to rave and trustworthy reviewers ignore bose entirely. See this website for a more accurate review. Most of what the author says lines up with my personal experience and testing of the bose system that came preinstalled in our rental is/was. I could not believe how terrible it sounded. I don't use it anymore as a system I built for less significantly outperforms it in every regard.

M50Xs are like the Beats of the audiophile world. They're the headphones that everyone goes with when they want to start becoming an audiophile, but they are complete shit. Audiotechnica both make great headphones. For $100 or less though look at M40Xs, SHP9500s (Highly reccomended), or HD559s.

Depends... are you willing to hold off and save up a little extra money to get some better cans?

This is your answer. Brainwavz HM5 are great pair, and XPT's are their under 100$ clone which is an absolutely amazing value.
As for your choices, low end sennheisers are mostly subpar in terms of quality/$. M40x are pretty okay, pretty much on par with the popular M50x but are flatter in characteristics, so not sure if that would be your preference.
