Can a PSU kill A GPU?

Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

It shouldn't have, but it should also be noted that the 80+ is efficiency, and while it does have a small amount to do with quality, it is far from the end all in the matter. I'd buy a better PSU if you're worried about it, though you should be fine with that one. At least the 780 isn't a huge investment if it dies again :P

There's a PSU tier list kicking around somewhere on here. It'd be worth taking a look at.

So just as the title says, can my PSU kill my GPU? Recently my GTX 780 died. My total system wattage was like 470W and i had an EVGA 500W 80+ so i though i was good cause 80+ but now i dont know.

The question is, did my 500W PSU kill my GTX 780? Because ive already bought another 780 and im wondering if i should get a 725W or 650W

Thanks

Specs:

 Laptop: Macbook Pro Retina 2013, i7 4558U, 8GB 1600MHz, Intel Iris Pro 1.5GB, Apple 256GB NVME, Mojave

Yes, a real bad one can. If you have a mediocre or decent psu, you’ll be fine. In your case, probably not

You should get a better quality unit, not buy based on wattage.

An EVGA 550G3 or Corsair RM550x would be a good choice for a 780.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Why another 780 -

and yes it can kill your GPU - you should try to leave 100w or 15-20% headroom - atleast

Yes, it can. PSU can kill all your components (apart from something like the case, obviously)

80+ ratings don't indicate quality, just power efficiency. EVGA's W1 series (the 80+/white units) are pretty bad, so there is a chance that you had a power surge and your PSU didn't stop it. But it's not really a component killer just due to being close to its max wattage.

Can't say whether the PSU is responsible though, there are many ways a GPU could die that are unrelated to the PSU.

The only way any PSU can kill a part is if it drives a higher voltage than what the part can take. So if it blew up and had a voltage spike during that time, then yes, it could have killed something.

ye, even an no brand psu with poor components inside made in china for cheapballing could have a 80+ rating :) yet catch on fire after a week and take all components with it lol
