Picking a motherboard Ryzen 5 1600

G'day guys,

 

I'm building a Ryzen 5 system and currently tossing up between motherboards for my first PC build. I'm currently looking at, in order, either;

1. MSI B350M Mortar Arctic AM4

2. MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon AM4

3. MSI B350 Tomahawk AM4 

The case will be the Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-ALPHA White & Red.

Any suggestions/advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

whatever is cheaper and has better reviews 

a cheap but stable motherboard will allow you to spend money on other areas of your computer - ex if you plan on mostly gaming save money on the mobo and get a better gpu

These are really expensive B350 boards.for 5 bucks more you can get a x370

Wont there be issues with the ram compatibility with the Tomahawk and x370?

Should mention I'm in Australia, everything is expensive AF, like.. the difference between the 350 and 370 boards is over $80

Agree to disagree. I have almost exclusively purchased Asus motherboards and yet the one MSI board I bought that was a budget board is fantastic. What is the basis of your bias?

I'd get the B350 Tomahawk, it's a good price and leaves room for a good GPU, a GTX 1070 would be a great buy for this build!

Both use DDR4 RAM, what RAM were you looking at purchasing?

I'd get the B350 Tomahawk, it's a good price and leaves room for a good GPU, a GTX 1070 would be a great buy for this build!

Because of the supposedly bad VRMs that the Tomahawk has, especially for R7 and even R5 1600 overclocking. At least that's what one user around here would say. :T

 

What kind of VRM temperatures do you get with the R7 at 3.9GHz?

Ryzen says the 1600 can only support up to 2666mHz

Where both the Tomahawk and x370 hav "2667(OC)/ 2933(OC)/ 3200(OC)+ Mhz" in their DDR4 memory.

Does this mean I would have to under clock? Or the system would be unstable? This is the part im really confused with..

im running the 1600 with 3200 ram just fine on the tomahawk just gotta update the bios

I am aware of not so great support from Asus haha. But in that scenario who cares then if neither are good.

I have not heard of those issues but only because I have not looked into it, good to know! 

 

I have some high-end cooling going on but even with my system running for probably 6 hours today so far, and currently I am watching Scrapyard Wars on floatplane, working on Autocad, Fusion 360, and looking at the LTT forums every few min, but I am only at 35 degrees C on the VRM, 27 degrees C on my motherboard, and 54 degrees C on the PCH.

You should be able to get high clock speeds on your RAM that being said if you OC the 1600 to the max it'll go you may have to underclock your ram a bit, Ryzen support for RAM still has some room to grow and my 1700 that is OC @ 3.9GHz only lets me clock my RAM to 2800MHz and not the 3000MHz it's rated at.

Nuu, i am running 3066.

3200 doesnt always boot

Both on X370-F and B350-F
