Been watching, and enjoying, the current season of SYW immensely over on Floatplane. While watching the latest episode, I had an idea -

What if you do a SYW where you do no benchmarks, but rather determine the winners by actually playing?

 

I present to you, the

 

Masterrace LAN challenge!

 

Each team is given a set amount of time and money to build 3 (or 5) separate systems. In the end, the winner is determined by which team's computers win the most games out of a list of popular e-sports titles,

played at high resolution, with maxed details (hence the masterrace prefix).

The idea is for the matches to be bottlenecked not by skill, but by performance!

 

A few points:

  • Building 3 or even 5 separate systems will require more time. You might want to give the competitors an extra day or two, but time should be tight, in order for the teams to be forced to take risks.

 

  • Budget should be balanced such that the teams will have no feasible way of actually getting a full lineup of systems capable of good framerates.

 

  • The teams should be forced to play on high-resolution monitors, to ensure high system requirements.

 

  • The actual players should not be any of the system builders. They should be shoutcasting the intense games! In stead, the teams pick their players ahead of every game, alternating one at a time, with the teams taking turns getting first pick. The system builders also get to decide which player uses which system. Hopefully this will somewhat balance player skill, while allowing for some interesting strategies when parting out the systems.

 

  • The teams could also be forced to get peripherals, to add another layer of fun!

 

What do you guys think? I think it's a really interesting way to do something completely new with respect to the bencmarking. We've kind of become used to the same criterion for the past seasons.

Not too long ago I was playing through the first few sections of Witcher 3 on an Intel 4790K & HD 4600, at 1080p Ultra.  I was getting around 3-5 fps or so, but was able to play it & kill some attacking critters.  (Didn't engage any Griffins, though, actually haven't progressed far enough to actually fight one yet.)

 

For example, how about playing CS:GO on a system that runs it like this... :P

That looks awesome! The hard part would be balancing the budget in such a way that you ensure low framerates... Would be tricky, but I would love seeing the teams go head to head on systems like that one. Would also be kinda cool to see the guys try to squeeze every possible frame out of the systems.

Maybe they could run it on a system that uses at least this much percentage of its resources JUST idling the freshly-installed OS by itself? :D (see the VM, not the main host.)

I'd also love to see a scrapyard wars done on vintage 8/16-bit systems - with the challenge of configuring such systems. :) (And no buying a complete system either.)  The contestants must be dealing with IRQs, cylinders/heads/sectors, etc - i.e. no plug and play.  No PCI, USB, SIMM/DIMMs, IDE or newer are allowed - has to be ISA, Serial, DIP chips, MFM/RLL or older. :)

 

 

That reminds me of another thing I'd love to see, and I'll put it in a spoiler so as not to overly clutter my post.  Basically turning the tables on nerd sports, with computer games - LMG on potatoes, and random girls on like server-grade systems.  (Video included of someone who's new to Call of Duty and FPS games in general.  I think there's some pretty funny moments in it.)

LMG (or some professional game players, like ones with multiple international championships each) would be playing with absolutely dirt-cheap peripherals - like, the keyboard and mouse combined might be $3 or something like that, new, not on sale.  Monitor might be a single 720p or lower resolution display - passive matrix, 12" or smaller, you get the drill I think. ;)
 

They'd probably each get a keyboard, plus either a trackball, touchpad or little nub mouse, but they'd all share the one monitor, AND one system.

 

Said system would have such low resources, that even if only one person was playing Wolfenstein 3D and that was the only game running, you'd peak at 4 fps when staring at a blank wall, at 320x200, lowest settings / CGA (if it supports it, I can't remember now).

Except, they'd be playing newer games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider,  Ghost Recon WIldlands, GTA V, etc - doing whatever necessary software hacks are needed to get a game to run on systems WAY lower end than the "official" minimum requirements.   (Which to me, might not be "minimum requirements" - I recently saw a RandomGamingInHD video where he ran a game on its minimum specs, and still got like 60fps at 1080p low/medium settings or something like that.  My "minimum" would mean you might be lucky to get 2 fps at lowest settings AND resolution, peak, and anything below that minimum, the game wouldn't even launch; and my "recommended" might be for like 30fps at 1080p medium or something like that, or 60fps for esports.)

 

 

Meanwhile, the other team would consist mostly of girls, or whoever, who have like NO experience with computer games, especially FPS or other modern games. :)  For example, they'd make the person in this video look like one of the aforementioned multi-championship players. :P

 

They'd be each playing on their own dedicated 8-socket Xeon server, with high-end enough graphics cards so that the aforementioned modern games could run with 16 8K monitors at maximum settings (including cranking up frame upscaling and AA), WITHOUT ever dipping below 240 fps. :P

 

Then, might the new-to-games players have a chance vs the veteran players? :D
