Hey,

PLEASE DON’T TURN THIS INTO SAMSUNG VS APPLE :P

I currently have a 5s and I am planning on upgrading to either iPhone 8 Plus or X. I am not too worried about price and I understand that the specs are basically the same. I want to get your opinion on what would be the long term modern phone and what wouldn’t. Please don’t be like “Apple fanboy” Apple does well with things like their cpus which is why this is a good long term choice.

iPhone X Differences:

You don’t have to clean the home button all the time with Touch ID, Face ID seems more secure and more fast.

Sleek design and I love the stainless steel, in my opinion I don’t mind the “notch”. I’m sure Apple will optimise some of the content on the X more over 11.1/2

Animoji

iPhone 8 Plus Differences:

Touch ID

Lower price

Same CPU and Camera as X

I don’t really like the design on the front, but I love the glass back. Not as keen on the bezels on 8 as much as X. I feel like I would want to buy the iPhone X after using the 8+ for a year for design reasons.

Please give your opinions on what you think is better as a long term phone, I can’t decide.

Thanks,

Lander

Wait until the iphone 10 comes out, then test it out at BestBuy or some place like that to decide. (Display models are great, that's how I decided on my laptop and my Galaxy S7)

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

It comes down to two things, screen size, and design.

1. Even though the X has a larger diagonal screen, 5.8in vs 5.5in on the 8+, the horizontal length of the screen on the 8+ is larger so the 8+ has a bigger screen. But then again the X has OLED and a higher resolution.

2. The iPhone 8+ looks dated, this design is more or less the same as when it originally came out on the iPhone 6 in 2014. In 2017, the year of no bezels, the iPhone 8+ looks extremely dated. The X looks like a 2017 phone.

Personally I am waiting and getting a 256gb iPhone X in black, but it's up to you if these features are worth the price.

This would normally be a good idea, but if you want to get an iPhone X anytime this year you have to be very lucky and get one right when the preorders launch, otherwise you won't get near one until probably February 2018.

On the bright side, he could get the iphone 8 whenever, seeing how there's such a surplus of them.

Yep, you can walk into any carrier store and get any one you want, iPhone 8 sales are doing terribly because everyone is waiting for the X, which will be almost impossible to get.

I think most of us know the differences between the two (at least anyone who's going to offer some advice), however what you didn't tell us is how you use your phone, and what you want in a phone. Which is what will actually help us give you an answer.

Personally, without knowing that, I'd go with the X simply because I like the look more and hate the bezels on the 4 year old iPhone 8 body.

-snip-

To be fair the screen isn't even 1% bigger. So. It's kind of a moot point.

And because it's basically just a refresh of the iphone 7, and therefore not worth the money to upgrade.

The 8+ screen is like 2% bigger in "usable" area (that's area ignoring the notch, although I personally don't have an issue with the notch and believe that developers/Apple will handle it properly -- effectively making it usable screen space by moving something less relevant onto it and freeing up the status bar area). I am curious to know how much of an impact that narrower screen would have on me though. I plan to upgrade from my 6s+ to the X because I would like a narrower phone.

Eh...depends. I mean it is crazy fast and the cameras are better, and there is wireless charging. I upgrade every year because when you pay monthly it's a waste to not upgrade unless you keep your phone 3 years. All it costs me to upgrade is the tax.

The 8 will feel like outdated old technology immediately when the X comes out.

Just skip it if money is not a problem.

IMO,8+.

The X is definitely more intriguing, but given Apple’s history, it’s bound to have some teething pains that the next revision will address.

The Workhorse (AMD-powered custom desktop)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | GPU: MSI X Trio GeForce RTX 2070S | RAM: XPG Spectrix D60G 32GB DDR4-3200 | Storage: 512GB XPG SX8200P + 2TB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda Compute | OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

The Portable Workstation (Apple MacBook Pro 16" 2021)

SoC: Apple M1 Max (8+2 core CPU w/ 32-core GPU) | RAM: 32GB unified LPDDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD | OS: macOS Monterey

The Communicator (Apple iPhone 13 Pro)

SoC: Apple A15 Bionic | RAM: 6GB LPDDR4X | Storage: 128GB internal w/ NVMe controller | Display: 6.1" 2532x1170 "Super Retina XDR" OLED with VRR at up to 120Hz | OS: iOS 15.1

Thanks for your help, I am going to an Apple store today so I will try out the 8 Plus in more detail (there’s no X at this store like some because it isn’t really an official Apple store) so its going to be a case of if I like the 8 enough which is unlikely.

I won’t be able to afford the X until around the 1st January, I have about enough money for the 8 atm and by the time the X is available I’m sure I will have enough.

Thanks,

Lander

I really hate to point this out, but not having enough money right now (but enough later) should be a real turn-off. Yes, I konw that you want to stay with Apple, but saving a few months of money that you don't have already to spend on a top-tier iPhone is not an ideal way to spend it. The iPhone 8 is (basically) just a 7 with wireless charging with minor improvements to the camera. Buying $1000+ devices, especially smartphones, especially iPhones, is in reality a horrible way to spend money. Sure, there's always the excitement of getting the new and latest device (I got my Galaxy S7 at launch and it was pretty cool), but for those concerned about money, it is not a good idea. I'm not saying that you should, but at least consider possibly a 7 or 6S (with a headphone jack!).

I don't use headphones much and I don't mind using the adaptor that is included when needs be. I have enough money for a iPhone 8 Plus, but want to wait and get the model higher so it lasts another year and I don't feel like I want the newest one next year, I also prefer most of the tech in the X (Face ID) as it is an improvement for me as I am constantly cleaning my home button. But good points, I don't like spending money but I know that I will earn enough money if I give it a few more month to be with a good amount of left over money. I don't like Samsung, my mum went from Apple to Samsung and reverted back to Apple after a year. I've also had Samsung devices in the past and they've never been as reliable as iPhones, I see that Samsung has made a big effort to overcome the iPhone but the iPhone has much better power driving it in the CPU.
