Others will provide links to other brands but these are the best in the market at the moment AFAIK and will handle anything you throw at them.

What other than best could they be? xD

I didn’t include the M5*** simply because they’re getting along in years although they are plenty solid. My M5A97 EVO R2.0 capped at 4.5ghz 1.368v without a fan over the VRM, the models above her have the same quality 6+2, so I assume they’re not far off the same ledge ?

Personal opinion here but OP should always aim for 8+2 if you’re planning to overclock an 8 core FX (yes i know many might find this overkill) :)

Okay let's see:

No overclock (cheapest option):

Gigabyte 970a DS3P

Biostar 990FXE

Overclocking up to 4.3-4.4Ghz:

Asus M5A97 R2.0 (not LE)

MSI 970 Gaming (not the Krait, one of the few rare okay MSI mobos, if moded by changing the thermal pads for the VRM area and considering a fan it can be included in the next category)

Overclocking between 4.5-4.7 Ghz (with some modding and tweaks this boards can do more, but most of the time will end up limited at the ~4.95Ghz mark):

Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0

Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0

Gigabyte 990XA UD3

Gigabyte 990FXA UD3

Gigabyte 990FXA UD5

Overclocking beyond 4.6Ghz (but even this boards at one point might need some extra cooling):

Asus 970 Pro Gaming Aura (its a good mobo and one man has managed via L2N to do a crazy OC with it, but generally speaking most results i've seen with it are within the 4.75Ghz margin)

MSI 970A Pro Gaming Carbon - i do not have very extensive data on it but so far it showed nice results

MSI 990FXA GD65

MSI 990FXA GD80

However the most solid choices are indeed:

Asus Crosshair V Formula Z

Asus Sabertooth 990FX

I’m going to get the get a 970 pro gaming aura later next month so I just put my 4300 back in and had it going at 5.2Ghz but thanks for all your guys help anyway. You are some pretty helpful people. If I could +rep I would but I don’t know if that is possible

Well luck is also part of the equation, a you got unlucky there, i know someone with a sabertooth that failed the binning lottery, same as you more then 4.5 was to much. One of the quirks of the fx cpu was that each chip could differ a lot from one another as far as oc and voltage. My fx 8300 could could go up to 4.6 without extra cooling, from there i needed to add a vrm fan and a back fan. The list is based of a rough estimate of results i've seen with fx cpu's but if you get unlucky and end up with one with high voltage leakage early in the oc, your screwed no matter what the board.

From what i read in OC.com and OC.net 4.5ghz it's about right where it's supposed to be for the older M5. 4.7ghz 1.431v on the Saber my VRM's don't go over 65c (without extra fans and taking into account the crappy coat of paint that makes them hotter) even after i ran Prime95 Blend for 24h, when i tried it on the M5 they went over 80c in a matter of seconds, VRM quality right there  :D  Still miss my old Crosshair V Formula though, voltage/BUS jump around too much even on Ultra High LLC.

Right, enough thread hijacking, if OP is happy that's peace out for me  B|
