Which CPU should I get?

Hey fellas. So as most of us know Christmas is right around the corner and I want to upgrade my current rig. However my mind is boggling right now over which CPU I should get?

My current rig:

CPU: AMD FX-8350

GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060

RAM: 2x4 8GB of DDR3 ram.

Im going to be creating content, live streaming, animating, designing, and most importantly GAMING!

Should I get a Ryzen 7 1700x or an intel i7-7700k?

Unfortunately either CPU I get im also going to have to get a new MB.. Any recommendations?

yeah don't get the 1700x just get the 1700. they're the same for less money. and intel isn't worth your time if you're going to be creating stuff. you'll need fast ram and try to get a x370 board in the budget they have better VRM

Primary System

  • CPU
    Ryzen R6 5700X
  • Motherboard
    MSI B350M mortar arctic
  • RAM
    32GB Corsair RGB 3600MT/s CAS18
  • GPU
    Zotac RTX 3070 OC
  • Case
    kind of a mess
  • Storage
    WD black NVMe SSD 500GB & 1TB samsung Sata ssd & x 1TB WD blue & x 3TB Seagate
  • PSU
    corsair RM750X white
  • Display(s)
    1440p 21:9 100Hz

@tp95112 Can you please explain why?

Content creation streaming so cores. If you want you can wait for coffee lake for 2 less but better IPC for gaming

@SquintyG33Rs Any good motherboard options? I also do plan on overclocking also..

yeah Overclocking is exactly why you'd want the better VRM. i'd suggest you an ASUS option they have the best bios. or maybe AsRock

@SquintyG33Rs It just seems like ASUS likes to overprice everything D: I was looking at MSI boards how about those?

unfortunately MSI has had the more problematic BIOS and they've had very high return rates on their AM4 board. i'm not sure about any specifics. i bought a MSI myself and didn't have problems but my friend was unlucky.

@tp95112 @SquintyG33Rs Also i've heard that you can't use certain types of ram for the 1700..

no RAM is fine now. it still prefers lower CAS timings and higher speeds but you can run at JEDEC anything

@SquintyG33Rs I see. I have a MSI board myself for AM3 and i've had no issues at all with it. Also was looking at ASUS boards and the ROG STRIX B350-F Gaming board looks like a good option for the money. I'll take a look at the MSI boards myself right now.

MSI is fine for most things, but AM4 (Ryzen) specifically is pretty bad. it's clear they didn't put much effort or R&D into the platform.

the 1700 is best for your case, since it has lots of cores, and can be OC'ed to 3.8 or so, even on the stock cooler.

the 7700K is better for gaming by a bit, but for content creation, the 1700 is probably 60-70% faster.

@SquintyG33Rs The X370 Gaming Pro Carbon looks like a excellent choice for the money.

I'd reccomend the ASUS B350-F or if you want something better, the X370-F

nothing major, just thought I'd let you know.

Depends on how much money you have invested into your current system.  This new topic I created a few minutes ago mentions CPU and GPU.

@RadiatingLight What's the difference between the two? The chipset?

Yep.

X370-F has the X370 chipset, which allows for SLI, and is generally just a higher-end chipset.

in addition, it's also a better board, meaning it has better VRMs, better VRM cooling, etc.

Well I build my original system in 2014. Which had everything but the GPU I mentioned in the post above. I've so far over the years upgraded the Case, PSU, Case, and I went from the stock AMD cooler to a NZXT Kraken x62. I really need to upgrade my CPU and Ram.

So now it's just a showdown between the MSI x370 gaming pro carbon and the ASUS ROG Strix X370-F!
