Windows is failing to start

Gir3

Specs: Intel i5 7600k

asus prime z270-a w/ version 1009 BIOS

corsair cx500

gskill tridentz rgb 2x8gb

evga gtx 1060 3gb

windows 7 home premium x64

problem: everything intros build is brand new except for the hard drive, it's about 3-4 years old. I just installed all of the new components today and when I booted it up it said windows failed to start and gave me the option to do startup recovery or start normally. If I choose start normally the windows logo animation starts but stops a few seconds in and then a blue screen flashes for a second and the computers restarts. This harddrive was working just fine before I put in these new parts. I updated the bios first but that changed nothing. I've looked in my bios and I can't find a setting to change from AHCI to IDE. This is my first build and I have no idea what I'm doing so in the interest of not breaking things I'm asking for help. If there any other info you need I'll be happy to provide as son as I can

You should do a full re-install ideally when you have changed mobo, which is essentially what you have done as you;re trying to use an older hard drive with windows already on it.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

Reinstall windows especially on windows 7. Also Kaby lake might not be fully supported on windows 7 so keep that in mind. If you are going to be reinstalling windows might be a good idea to upgrade to windows 10. 35 bucks on Kinguin and windows 7 doesn't get security updates anymore and it getting old in general.

This may be a stupid question but could I buy an ssd and put windows on that and use my current hdd as is but windows is running from the ssd? I'd like to avoid having to reinstall all of my programs as my internet is fairly slow

Yes you can. Might be a hassle though. Not 100% sure if you can access the drive
