The R5 1600 still surpasses the i5-7600K in that regard.

The i5-7640X shouldn't exist at all.

Theoretically they are the same chip. You may be able to get a better overclock due to binning but it shouldn't matter. The big thing is that x299 board have more features and are way more expensive. If you really want the option to upgrade to other x chips consider the 7640 otherwise stick to the 7600k and the cheaper z270 board. I'd suggest looking at the r5 1600 but if you are just gaming go with the i5 at least for 1080p.

they are basically even in fps averages but the r5 1600 is way better in terms of frame times meaning you will have a more steady framerate and less stuttering which is what really matters when gaming. also the r5 1600 plus mobo is much cheaper meaning you can get a better gpu which is way more important in the end anyways.

Technically yes. You get 100 mhz extra. However for that extra 100mhz you pay like $100 more for the motherboard. Also right now is literally the worst time in the history of i5's to buy one. Ryzen 5 1600 outperforms then in gaming most of the time (There's always the exception that proves the rule) and games will eventually start using more than 4 cores and the Ryzen will dumpster the i5. Not only that, there are new i5's coming out with 6 cores instead of 4 that would be more in like with the Ryzen 5 1600. DO NOT get an i5 right now unless you can find them for i3 prices because in like 3 weeks they will be equivalent to i3's.

In tomb raider they trade blows depending on who's benchmarking it. According to digital foundry the Ryzen wins. The true exception that shows the i5 crushing is Far Cry Primal which really is the exception that proves the rule.

I'm just saying that's the biggest win for the i5. I never said it mattered.
