Linus always talks about AIO media player

Linus has talked about an All in One media platform that streams everything from netflix, amazon, hulu, etc on the WAN show multiple times. It basically combines everything into one. Does Linus have a specific one in mind or does it not actually exist yet?

an XBOX One X is better than an HTPC imo. Cheaper, can be made better looking, smaller, and made for streaming/gaming. Plus you can get xbox exclusives...

Chances are high that OP is thinking of the XBOne S, as it's competitively priced against 4K bluray players, has well developed apps for Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, and dozens, if not hundreds of other media apps, pyo.

Yeah only if we're looking at a vacuum where only the Xbox and cheaper prebuilt machines exist, pyo. Otherwise, an HTPC like my Node 202 build is more powerful, takes up about as much space, maintains a minimal aesthetic, leaving the only 2 advantages of the XBOne: 10ft GUI and ODD, pyo.

if you buy used sure but you can easily get a xbone for 200 here in canada so I assume 150 in us is reasonable

This is as cheap as Drak3 could go with PCPP, pyo. Had I been able to chose older AMD parts than AM4, I'd be able to go even lower with ease, pyo.

You can get a used one for 150 and i doubt they'll be something that tops that under 150.

Also your part's list dosen't include the price of a CPU so it cost's realistically 80 more

My parts list doesn't include the price of the CPU because I'm locked into AM4. I need to compensate as one can still buy older processors pretty easy. There is still a plentiful stock of older APUs.

That APU is limited to HEVC 8-bit Main Profile for hardware decoding and it lacks the necessary raw CPU power for software decoding of HEVC 10bit at 4K.  That's kind a big handicap if you want to build something in 2017 and not be forced to upgrade with a GT 1030 or something.  So right out the box, you have a huge handicap for 4K when going against the Xbox One.  For gaming, the A6-9500 is grossly inferior to the Xbox One's processor so you'd need to add a discrete GPU to get it on par with an Xbox One (And the PS4 sets the bar higher).  Plus there's no optical drive where as the Xbox One S can readily support UHD BD.

 

So, all of that plus the whole 'Xbox One Is Idiot Proof For Media' basically just by the remote control for it and you can forget it's a gaming machine.  I mean, I get that there are 10 foot interface media applications for PC, mainly Kodi and Plex and I'm an extensive Kodi user myself but, well, those options suck a lot for integrating a wide range of media services.  Heck, YouTube on Kodi can't even access the whole YouTube API so it can't even make recommendations for content.

 

That said, if you wanted something purely for media, I'd vote nVidia Shield myself but that's assuming you didn't want DISC media, it's cheaper and DISGUSTINGLY overspecced, making it a long lasting, near future proof addition to any home entertainment center.

I concur, though disc media could be added in with a USB BD Drive and finding an app or script that gave the compatibility to Android, pyo.

 

As far as the whole HTPC thing goes, I'm restricted by PCPP's options, pyo. I can't access anything prior to AM4 as far as AMD's hardware goes, pyo. There are some fairly good and cheaper AM3 and FM2 parts that are still in a good stock, pyo. Only reason I chose the A6-9500 was because it was the only APU listed, no price, pyo. Had to somehow compensate, pyo.
