Good Gfx card for 1440p gaming

chojo

Hi,

ATM I have an AMD Radeon 7950 and want to change it. I want to play on 1440p full HD, I don't plan to 4k gaming anytime soon. I only game, I do not video edit or stream.

What gfx card should I get that being said? My Radeon still work, so if something very cool that could fit my need is about to get released, I could wait a little or wait for black friday deals.

Thank you in advance

You should also make sure your CPU is strong enough for the newest GPUs

What is your CPU ?

Vega 56 or a GTX 1070 would be my pick, or if you are running a higher then 60 Hz refreshrate monitor, a GTX 1080

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

It's good enough for mostly all games, but will be a bit too weak for cpu intensive game if you buy a gtx 1070 or higher.

see how much it impact performance with a 1080 ti per example her e:

1440p isn't full HD :P

So you ahve 2560x1440? Does your Monitor have 60 Hz, or 144 Hz?

If 60 Hz, a GTX 1070 / RX Vega 56 (Both around 400-430 bucks~, pls don't pay 500+ for those 2 !!!) are completely fine. Not a perfect 60 fps Lock on Ultra every game, but mostly.

If you NEED Ultra + perfect 60 fps Lock, even a GTX 1080 won't do it. My 1080 sits at 45-50 fps in Ghost Recon Wildlands, if i crank every single setting to the Max.

Remember: You can bring EVERY Graphic Card down to it's knees, with the right Game, and the right settings. It depends on your expectations ^^

But yea, i would go for a GTX 1070, or GTX 1080 if it's less than 80-90 bucks more expensive (because of price / performance). Or Vega 56 once it's actually out in non-garbage-models (lol-Reference), and just tweak the settings a tiny little bit. And be happy

The Vega 56 is in a garbage state right now? I just saw on newegg canada that the vega 56 is currently in promotion of 699$ + Wolfenstein 2. I can grab a GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 for 659$ at newegg too.

Which one should I go for? The GTX I guess...?

Don't forget Vega 56 for good balance Nx 64 for ultra 60 if you find them at the right price and want free sync

I would get the 1080 then, the Vega 56 is roughly equivalent to a 1070 and for that price it doesn't seem worth it.

Don't misunderstand me.

I am not calling Vega garbage, but simply the Cooling solution. In my opinion, the Nvidia Founder's Cooler is also garbage (from the GTX 1080 upwards, or even 1070. Fine on 1060), but still better than on AMD, since higher TDP on AMD --> more difficult to cool --> louder.

I call every reference type Cooler for GPUs garbage. it's loud, inefficient, hot, cheap. And only "loud" is enough reason for ME, to not even consider it^^

From those: GTX 1080 > Vega 64 even. Not a competition even vs. the worse Vega 56.

1080 is faster than Vega 64, while consuming much less power than Vega 56.

Exception: You have a Freesync Monitor. Then Vega > Nvidia.

Variable Refresh Rate > 20% more fps
