PC Upgrade Help

Go to solution Solved by Bananasplit_00,

grab an I7 4790K and a 1070/1080

Hello!

I'm considering upgrading my CPU, Mobo, and RAM for when I decide to upgrade my GPU later down the line. The only reason I'm upgrading is because I want more performance from my system. My current build is listed below. I will also put what parts I was thinking about upgrading to down below.

  • CPU
    Intel I5-4460
  • Motherboard
    MSI Z97 PC Mate
  • RAM
    4x4 Corsair Vengeance 1600MHZ
  • GPU
    Gigabyte G1 Gaming R9-390
  • Case
Cooler Master HAF XM (With Window Side Panel)
  • Storage
    (Old Model) Seagate 1TB + Samsung 850 Evo 120GB
  • PSU
    EVGA NEX 650G (Fully Modular)
  • Display(s)
Garbage (Not complete garbage but could be better lol)
  • CPU Cooling
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
  • General Cooling
    Corsair SP 120, 1 Corsair AF 120, 2 Stock 200,
I don't have a ton of money to buy very high end system like I dream of, but I work with what I can get.
So for the CPU Upgrade I was thinking:
Ryzen 5 1600X $240
Motherboard:
ASRock AB350 Pro4 $90
RAM:
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 2666mhz (I believe that's the highest the Mobo supports.)
CPU Cooler:
I planned on using the 212 EVO still and just getting the adapter piece for it.

Let me know what you guys think!

Why Upgrade? The CPU Is still good, but maybe another 8Gigs of Ram would be nice to have. Also, maybe a bigger SSD? But if you want to upgrade these components, go on, have fun!

You want more performance, but what's wrong with the performance you have already? What are you intending to do? Upgrading for the lulz doesn't really do you much. And upgrading on the presumption your daily driver apps will also increase in performance won't really do much because those apps run at full speed on potatoes.

But otherwise, if you're dead set on those parts, get faster RAM since Ryzen likes faster RAM.

grab an I7 4790K and a 1070/1080

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

totally agree. new gen of RAM and CPU doesnt give as much improvement as just have a 4790k and overclock it.

yah the main upgrade in performance going from the 4790K to the 7700K at the same clocks is the upgrade to DDR4, which isnt super segnificant and definatly not worth the cost. used I7 4790Ks can go for $250 or lower and he already has the motherboard, RAM and cooler so its just a drop in swap

My intention was to upgrade so my PC could handle a 1070 or 1080 in the future. Another user mentioned getting a I7 4790K which I agree would work great.

Oh that's actually not that bad. Where would you recommend getting used PC parts? Ebay? I live in a place that doesn't have that many people selling PC parts on craigslist.

What's the difference between it and the  i7-4790K?

It's on Broadwell (not that much of a difference, but there is one), it has L4 cache and better intergrated graphics.

Well since you have a Z97 chipset, why not get a i7-5775C?

5000 series chips are EXTREMELY rare compared to 4th gen, thats why not

Sounds good, Last question for you. Is it alright that I'm running 4x4gb 1600 RAM or would it be better to go for 2x8GB 1866?

dont bother upgradeing the RAM, its fine so dont spend money on it. instead spend that money for the RAM on finding a better GPU

Thanks Boss, you've been a big help I didn't even know about the 4790K!

no problem, i have one and its great. if you get the late batch chips they can get to 5GHz even :D its a much better buy then getting a 1600 or whatever if you already have the motherboard
