Best Ryzen CPU (w/oc) for GTX 1060 6gb (ITX build)

Hello again everybody,

I'm just about done parting out my build, and I have one last component to sort out.

For my graphics card, I'm going with the Aorus Xtreme 1060 6gb, which I will be running in OC mode at all times.

I am also going with a Ryzen build, and I have already purchased a B350 AM4 mobo.

I was going to get the Ryzen 3 1200 and just OC it to 3.9ghz, but now I am wondering if that is still underpowered for the graphics card I chose.

Does anyone know what is the cheapest Ryzen CPU i can get that will allow me to take full advantage of the GTX 1060 in most AAA games?

I know how to manually OC, and apparently it is crazy easy to do with Ryzen, so I plan on OC'ing as much as I can safely, so it's not like I need to get a Ryzen 7 or something.

To answer the standard questions: This will be a Gaming PC/ HTPC for 1 4k TV that will be played with a controller.

I know the 1060 is not a great 4K card, but even if the games run at 1080p, it'll be fine.

Here is the PCPartsPicker link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QhKNM8

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

1600 imo, overclock it to 3.8 or higher if you're lucky and extra cores and threads compared to 1500x, 1400 etc.

4k on a 1060? That'll be tight on triple-A games.

As far as CPUs go I'm really not sure.

Thanks for the input.

Although, I didn't think the extra cores or threads were that important for this build

This will be used almost exclusively for gaming and video playback, neither of which require a lot of cores.

I thought that clock speed it more important here, right?

I am also already over budget, so I am really trying to keep it on the cheap at this point.

Yeah. I know. This build is for someone who is used to consoles though, so even if it runs at 1080p and the TV upscales it, that would be fine.

They also would mainly play games like Rocket League or FIFA, and I found those games can hit 30fps+ at 4k, which should be good enough.

If that's the case go for the 1400 and overclock it to a higher clock speed, should be able to handle that 1060

overclocked 1200 should hold a 1060 6gb fine: It's faster than slower i5s.

You will need another graphics card though, preferably a cheaper one (around $280) because the Aorus card you picked is too tall for the Node 202

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1

The Ryzen 1200 would still be a good cpu to use with the 1060 at 1080p. At 4k? Don't even worry about it, the 1060 will be hella bottlenecking.

Wait, is it too tall?

I checked the specs and the graphics card is 59mm tall, and fractal design said that with 10mm fans, you could have a graphics card with a max of 50mm, which made me think that the case has 60mm clearance.

Well, I checked and in less demanding games, like Rocket League, the card can handle 4k.

Node 202 itself is a HTPC case. If you remove the case fans then there's nothing to take the heat of the card out of the case, causing it to run loud

Besides, just 1mm clearance means any error within tolerance will keep this card out of the case.

Get faster ram and a normal hdd, ditch the firecuda.

That entirely depends on the game though. Maybe for older or non-intensive games it can but for modern triple A it can't run in 4k.

Well yeah, I never said a 1060 couldn't, and rocket league can run on a potato lol

I thought about heat dispensation, but if i did put fans there, exhaust fans on the bottom of the case which are in direct competition with the card's fans doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and if they were intake, it would be redundent, as the Graphics card fans are right there pulling cool air in from underneath.

Plus, I read that the Aorus card keeps incredibly cool, not breaking 60 even in OC mode.

I thought about modding the case slightly and putting a small 92mm exhaust fan on the side of the card to take the hot air out, but I think a blower card like the Asus turbo would be WAY louder than the Aorus.

And I know I am playing with fire having only 1mm clearance. Unfortunately, I already ordered the card, so I might as well see if it fits, and the bottom 3mm or so is all plastic shroud, so I could maybe sand a little of it off if I absolutely have to.

The Firecuda is for game storage. The OS will be running off a 250gb m.2 sata ssd that my friend had lying around.

Currently the firecuda is the cheapest 2tb 2.5" drive around. Even cheaper than a regular 5400rpm HDD.

Oh yeah. This build is a gift to a friend from myself and another friend of ours. He's currently on console, so the expectations are relatively low.

My plan is to put a good spine in this build, meaning that he could update the GPU or CPU down the line and not have to start all over, hence why I am using an AM4 socket and a case that allows for a full size graphics card.

I mean, if he wanted, he could upgrade to a Ryzen 7 and a 1080 ti and go 4k 60fps without touching any other component.

Then by all means get the firecuda
