I recently built a fairly budget pc for photo editing (laptop wasn't cutting it anymore) and some light gaming. I am running an AMD 6300 on a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 motherboard. I am now getting into video editing and I am starting to run into some snags. I was planning on overclocking the CPU to get a little bit of a boost on it but I know I need something other than the stock cooler in order to do that. I was reading a lot about the noctua NH-D15 cooler and was going to get it but I had read that some people were having issues with it not fitting with other components mainly graphics cards. I only have the one pci-e slot so I can't have that blocked and I'm not sure which route I should take. I'm just looking for something that would let me get a decent overclock out of it and not be obnoxiously loud during use. Water cooling has me a little nervous so I was planning on sticking with air cooling for the time being. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help.

Where are you shopping/located?

An expensive cooler wouldn't make much sense value-wise paired up with the 6300 and saving up for a future upgrade would make more sense.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

coolermaster 212 or cryorig h7 are good choices, shouldn't interfere with ram or pcie slots, and they would also be able to transfer to a new system if you choose to upgrade

Based on the replies here I'm guessing that it would not be worth it to sink more money into the current build that I have and I would be better served to just upgrade. I looked into the Ryzen 3 1300X and unless I'm completely missing something it doesn't seem like it would be much of an upgrade from where I am at currently. I could go with a Ryzen 5 1600 or 1600X but at that point I believe the GPU (GTX 1050ti) would be bottlenecking it to the point where it wouldn't be worth doing that upgrade either. Am I missing something when looking at the specs for the Ryzen 3 1300X or would my only option to get smoother video editing performance be to basically scrap what I have and start over?

I realize this thread has shifted from air cooling so it may not belong here any more.

Thanks for the help.

R3 would have 2 less cores but would be 45% faster, meaning it's performance would be the same or much better in just about everything.

Ryzen also has more cache and is significantly less power hungry and durable.

1050 ti + ryzen is an awesome pairing.  You will likely get 100% usage out of the gpu but that's not a bad thing, for example I use 98% of my 1070 but it doesn't harm performance, just means I'm getting the best results possible.

A ryzen 5 1400 or 1600 + b350 mobo and some zippy ddr4 would be a humongous upgrade, even a 1200 would likely work wonders.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Thanks for the help.

If you still want help on coolers (though Ryzen stock coolers are much better than older AMD stocks, so no need to get one if you go that route), we need to know which mobo and maybe which RAM/case you have. When you say 1 PCIex16, does that mean its ITX or mATX board? Since bigger air coolers usually block 1st PCIe slot, if PCIe x16 is first slot, that will limit cooler selection. To essentially H7 and smaller.

This is my current setup (a few brands were different but the same specs)

These are the parts that I'm thinking about getting to add in a little more performance for video editing.

I'm hoping that I'm in the right ballpark here but if not please let me know

Honestly, the Wraith cooler will be fine and it should run pretty quiet.

If you aren't satisfied, you can always upgrade.

Also, as an owner of the ND-15 SE AM4 Edition, it will block a PCI-E slot.

It blocks the top PCI-E 1x slot on my X370 board.

However, it keeps my R7 ice cold.

Also, I would recommend that if you are spending in this ballpark, to just get an R5 1600.

the extra cores and threads will give you noticeably more performance for that extra $50.

As I've also echoed in other posts, I will always recommend Ryzen certified DDR4 3200 RAM.

With that older build you would need to get smaller cooler than dual towers or 140mm towers. Good part is that most of smaller coolers would be just fine for the use case.
