Don't buy headphones without listening to them prior to the purchase.

I bought the HD6xx's which are similar to the HD650's.

I purchased these without an DAC/AMP, and can say after plugging them in to my PC without it, they definitely needed one. Volume was very quiet (even turned all the way up) and a DAC/AMP combo of some sort wil go a long way!

They worked fine when plugged into my S8+, but again, for best results it's probably best to get some sort of DAC/AMP

Well that is your system then. Question is: What would he use if not a dedicated AMP?

Danger! Danger! Yer about to unleash a flame war! Sorry, Cl362...

...you're going to get a lot of ideas about this one. The HD600, 6xx, 615 & 515 (mine) are apparently easy to drive. The set I have connected to my XBox1 (via a Turtle Beach dss2 dac/amp ) pump out loud (?) crystal clear sound (especially when I listen to moody Witcher3 music). My iPad & iPhone6s+ also power them just fine (even more so than my frustrating PSB 4MU-2 cans [sheesh]). My only issue is that the open-back bleeds off sound that pisses off my wife. My 2 cents... sound good without an external dac/amp.... A+ with it. You can't go wrong. Happy shopping, eh. ??

Ger_T41ga is right on the money.  Whenever I'm downtown here in Toronto, I try to drop by BayBloor Audio. Their wall-o-headphones are overpriced; however, at least one can try them on for fit (the store's got their own player wired into the display... beware). @SSL knows his/her stuff (search 'is prior posts for ideas).

They should be quite nice. If you don't like them, return them.

You will need a dac/amp but any phone and device can power the headphones however the volume might be very quiet...  The Nintendo switch is pretty quiet, my Samsung galaxy s7 edge has volume but also quiet without a amp.

my current motherboard is the crosshair vi hero...and the sound board says...

ROG's awesome SupremeFX audio technology has levelled up, delivering an exceptional 113dB signal-to-noise ratio on the line-in connection and 120dB on line-out — and that means our best-ever recording quality! We've also added a low-dropout regulator for cleaner power delivery to the SupremeFX S1220 codec, an ESS® Sabre Hi-Fi ES9023P digital-to-analog converter for superior front-panel output, and a Texas Instruments® RC4580 op-amp for high gain with low distortion — which all adds up to audio that envelops you as never before.

would this be good enough to power them and hear the difference till i get a dac/amp

 Should probably be good enough.
