Internet speed for lan party?

RGProductions
Go to solution Solved by LAwLz,

Like other people have already said, you should be fine. Gaming typically uses very little bandwidth, so one or four players doesn't make much of a difference.

There is no need to worry about ports either. You will be bottlenecked by your Internet connection speed long before you get bottlenecked by your router/switch. That's of course assuming you won't start doing local file transfers between the computers. In that case you will be bottlenecked quite heavily.

Hello all! I have a 15/5 internet connection. I also have friends (shocker @themctipers) I want to host a lan party of pubg. Would my internet be sufficient for all 4 of us to play pubg reasonably?

It would take way to long to get all these people to get their pcs up here if we can't play it.

Yeah. Just wondering if all our pings would go through the roof because of the usage.

honestly my dude, I dont usually think about this kinda stuff when going to/ hosting a lan party with my friends, we've never ran into issues. Your best bet would probably be download some sort of internet usage software, play a game of pubg (squads to try to control as many variables as possible) and then multiply your results by four to see if your internet will suffice (hopefully it will be enough with some breathing room <3 )

Good luck!

LAN 101, make sure everyone has their machines up dated and every game you plan on playing up dated.  It is way to easy to spend half the day waiting for everyone to update not to mention slamming your data cap pretty easily.

should be fine.

games take good ping, not tons of bandwidth.

you could install overwolf or something, but I don't think that's neccecary.

Data caps are no issue, it's speed. And I've got that down, held these before but with local games only.

then my educated guess would be it's about ping and not throughput.  What ever someone said about port's might make sense but I know nothing about that.  I'd imagine hammering a router/modem all on the same port would be an issue.  But then you are opening a whole new can of worms of unforeseen network config issues.

Can you explain further? Not a network expert. You mean like 127.xxx.xxx.xx or like Ethernet jack?

yeah well with 4 people hitting that i don't think it would keep up nicely 25Mbps so only 3 mega bytes for each of you doesn't leave much to spare

What? My speed is 15/5. That's never more than 20 megabits per second through gear rated for 100?

You should be fine as long as you all aren't streaming your own videos or music. Throughput isn't massive during gameplay. The speed of your router itself may be the limiting factor here.

My router is fine. It's the same router they do on their 100/25 stuff. Minimum standard is 10/100, one port is 10/100/1000

If you've done local games before you should have no problem doing online multiplayer. I would just make sure everyone's games are up to date before they arrive!

You should be fine, just make sure your friends stop torrenting because it will hog your bandwidth. Personally most lan parties i had back in day doesn't really require connecting to internet. As most of game we played were through local private servers, most of time we just shared around one copy of crack game and had crazy night.
