These old 1366 Xeon CPUs rock. Beat any modern i3, and some i5s. Granted, my Xeon was 1000€ new :D

And 25€ used :D

and you can get quite lucky on the motherboards too, paid 130 for mine including all 24 gigs of DDR3 (and an i7 930 that I now use to open boxes :P)

I would almost bet that my system is probably in the top 1% price per performance on here - 350€ total, 200 of that CPU/RAM/Cooling, 0 GPU and 150 for PSU+SSD

Xeon e5649@4.4 GHz on Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte x58a-OC (whatever I feel like to set up at a time) , 6x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Gainward GTX 670 Phantom, Samsung 840 Evo 240 GB, BeQuiet L8 530W

Yeah mine one ended up being around 25€ used too.

I had gotten the MOBO (and an i7 950) as a gift actually, so that cost me nothing.

Soon gonna get me some used 16gb ram :). Tbh, I don't even need that much, but I'm getting a good deal.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

i7 5820k at 4.4 to 4.6Ghz depending on the time of year. Looking forward to putting my winter OC back on in a few months. Have had no reason to even consider upgrading yet, maybe in about a year from now there will be something compelling. I'm open to both AMD and Intel. I want to see what AMD does with the followup to Ryzen, hoping they can grab a few more % on IPC. We shall see what happens. Though I'm very happy, I can game and multitask at the same time with no slow downs, which is all I wanted out of it.

This is the only time in 20 years of computing that I've gotten a true, golden chip. The voltages and temps are unreal, another reason I don't want to move away from this platform any time soon. 1.15v at 4.4Ghz and 1.222 at 4.6Ghz.

Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the ‘transcendent’ and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don’t be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.

You should check if your motherboards supports ECC, PC3-12800 ECC DIMMs are really cheap on the used market. I have been considering selling my non-ECC DIMMs and upgrading to 48 GB, but I can't think of a reason why :(

I don't believe it supports ECC ram (I know for a fact it doesn't support registered ECC ram), so sadly can't do that. And tbh, I don't even need any more. The most multitasking I do is video games, YouTube, and a few other tabs open at the same time.

Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly; the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly.

It's been about 24h since I started the poll, and with a total of 53 votes in, just over half of respondents (55%) have an Intel quad. Ryzen is the next biggest group at 17%, closely followed by Intel HEDT at 15%. There's a bunch of Xeon users, but no one on Opteron - too old now? Also no Threadripper yet - the other extreme and too new perhaps. A little surprising to see no votes for low end Intel. I know they're out there, but maybe not seeing this thread.
