Thermals on 1080 Founder's Edition?

Wobblyyyy

Hello everybody -

As a first time system builder, I am quite afraid of picking up a graphics card that overheats. I have very poor airflow in the case I am going to be using because of water cooling for the CPU. The blower design on the 1080 Founder's Edition is quite appealing because it pushes air OUT of the case through the back. This means that I won't have internal heat dissipation and thus have to worry about now supplying the 1080 Founder's Edition with enough cool air. So... should I use the Founder's Edition and get slightly higher temps or go with a aftermarket variant and get lower temps at the cost of possibly not having enough air? Which which just cause even higher temps...

blowers are almost ALWAYS less efficient than case discharge coolers because of the lack of surface area. They all run hot, every one of them. but you have to make sacrifices. If you're not going to have enough intake and exhaust to a case discharge, then blower or liquid are your only choices.

I went for an FE 1080ti in my bequiet case as due to the case design it does get a wee bit hotter than my old Corsair case.

I used to run a 980ti evga, SC+, the card had a 150 core and 300 mem overclock. With this setup my CPU would hit around 73c Max after a 2-3 hour gaming session. And idle at around 33.

Now with everything the same except the GPU changed to the 1080ti FE (and same OC on card) my CPU will max at 68 and idle at 28.

The 980 used to max at around 79-80c the 1080 tops out at 73c.

A FE card might throttle a tad, but it shouldn't overheat. Most of them settle around 82-84c, which is perfectly fine.

Blower style coolers are generally recommended in small cases, cases with low airflow, or SLI configurations. Also, going with a FE card guarantees you compatibility with a Kraken shroud for AIO liquid cooling if you wanted to go that route.

Yup. Plus, they look really nice. @Princess Cadence uses FE cards, IIRC.

Yes I am replacing my old TITAN X Maxwell FE for a 1080ti FE, why? they actually have attractive pricing, they perform exactly the same as aftermarket ones clock for clock, they still overclock fine enough and no I have never seen FE thermal throttle if you have a decent enough case and air flow.

The only true downside of the FE card I accept agreeing is that is louder on full loads however since I usually either have my volume on TV way up or has headset on the noise never mattered... on idle and low loads it is as noiseless as any aftermarket as well.

and damn they are the best looking cards, period.

Yup. EVGA's 1080 Tis look nice, but not as nice as the FE. IMO, the 1080 and 1070 FTW models look nicer than the respective FE though.
