So Windows 10 is doing some "things".

So i built a new PC last night and today got around to put Windows 10 on it but it's been long gone since windows updated and it tells me i'm up to date and i downloaded every single driver for my PC...

The problem is that windows is always doing something with my disk like just ideling will make the disk to be 3% or even some times 7% it's always reading 100 kb and writing 23 kb and such

always doing something with my disk. Even at idel and i was wondering if that small thing would slow me down during games or it's just Windows 10.

PS : Almost all the time the thing that causing this is the System process in the task manger and some other process called malwear something.

The 'Malware' one is Windows Defender, doing small scans every now and then. The System process is the operating system loading things. Don't worry about it.

If I need to use Windows 10 (like on my Chromebook I hacked the shit out of) then I disable Windows Defender, sometimes it can use 100% of all resources at once, and it's annoying. You need to use Group Policy Editor to do so because killing the process shuts the PC down.

Of course killing it shuts down the PC, it's the system process and is required to run for the system to operate. It's essentially the kernel.

As you recently installed Windows, Windows is active at doing its maintenance cycle.

It involves:

  • Doing Windows Updates (and other Microsoft products such as Office if you have the option checked)
  • Scanning for malware and viruses
  • Indexing your data for instant and fast search
  • Updating Store apps
  • Defraging (if HDD) or executing TRIM (if SSD)

This happens when your system is idle, and awake. So this process can be time consuming.

Want to accelerate the process?

  • Disable Sleep momentarily so that you can leave your computer turned on for extended time (say over night) without worrying it going to sleep. Don't forget to enable it back after.
  • Open the Store app, click on the profile picture next to the Search box, and go to "Downloads and updates", and click on "Check for updates" or "Get updates" button.
  • Once it finishes or finds nothing, check for Windows Updates (Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Check for updates), To search for other updates, go to "Advanced options" link, and check the box "Give me updates for other Microsoft products...", go back and check for updates.
  • Start the maintenance schedule manually by doing: Start > type: Maintenance > pick: Security And Maintenance > Expand Maintenance > and click on the blue link "Start Maintenance". There is no progress bar. You just wait until the text returns to "Start Maintenance". You can leave you computer over night doing this. The time it takes depends on how much data you have, and system specs.

Windows defender is not a part of the kernel. Its an unnecessary process.

I wasn't talking about defender, I was talking about the System process
