Is it finally time to go full Red?

Hello all.

 

I, like many of you have an Nvidia 10-series GPU. Not because it was the only option, but because it's the best option for gaming. Or WAS it?

 

With the release of specs and details of the Radeon RX Vega series by Linus, I have renewed faith that a full AMD system is something that people who want the best of the best are starting to consider for the first time since.. Hell I can't even remember. 

 

My current system is in my sig, standard Ryzen 7 w/ 1070FE. Is it time now to get out there and pre-order a Vega 64 or 56? Or should we hold on and wait for a more stable release with mature drivers? 

 

Surely by then Nvidia will have released a new graphics architecture to nail down their dominance in the gaming GPU market. I, for one, am tired of them being the only good option. 

 

I think I'll be pre-ordering a 64 myself. Not because it's definitely the best, but because I no longer enjoy only seeing Nvidia cards in my system. 

 

What are your thoughts? Sorry if this has been discussed many times through already.

Wait for benchmarks if you've waited this long for vega you wouldnt mind waiting to see its price per performance

vega sounds like a viable option, but I don't see personally the benefits over a 1070 with the leaked performance that would justify the cost.

But you are speaking with one of the few people on the forum who still use  a 970 and I'm not thinking of upgrading it because of the exact same reason. Price doesn't justify the performance gain atm for me personally.

Just be wary if the supposed power consumption of the new vega cards is true.

The Vega 64 is only slightly less then a 1080(at 499 vs 549) and the 1080ti is still the same price as the liquid Vega 64.It's the exact same with the 56 and a 1070

With threadripper's PCIE lanes and AMD not abondoning CF. I would totally get 2 or 4 VEGA 56 cards

I think that vega cards look promising. All I'm seeing online is people bitching and moaning that it's not 1080ti  performance so what's the point.. funnily enough I bet less than 1% of their idiots would actually ever buy a 1080ti..

 

For $500 and near 1080 performance on a new board, I don't think it's bad. You get hmb2 and a slick looking package that packs a punch.

 

Depending on what pricing is like when it comes to the UK I may upgrade my 980ti for one or 2!

I would wait, not just for the reasons mentionned above (benchmarks, mostly), but also to see if AMD dishes out good driver support, if you can - that's been one of their weaknesses when compared to NVIDIA, from what I've read.

I am just wondering whether it's worth switching from a 1070 honestly. I only have 1 pci-e slot due to mITX form factor otherwise I'd be interested in multi-slot card setups. But I've always been a shameless AMD fanboy, I even owned an FX 9370 despite obvious reasons to do otherwise. Not that I like owning pointless or overkill products, but I REALLY want to switch to AMD without downgrading or wasting my money. Not sure if that's possible at the moment. But hopefully if I can get my 1070 sold for a decent price I can just buy one straight out.

I am usually against pre-orders, but I think it is justifiable for Vega.  We know roughly what performance will be.  If you are happy with the performance estimates for the price, go for it!

 

We also know what Vega will mature very well with drivers and game optimizations.  AMD has announced new game optimization tools to make it easier for devs to fully utilize Vega.  Estimates put Vega a little ahead of the gtx 1080, but I think it is reasonable to assume it will match the 1080 ti within a few months, and continue to age like fine wine.
