Hi,

I currently own two GTX 780 in SLI and I'd like to upgrade my rig so that it can handle 1440p gaming. What card (and manufacturer) would you guys recommend ? GTX1080 / GTX1070 ? I'm not really on a budget but I don't want to waste money uselessly either :)

Thanks a lot in advance :)

Either would be good for ultra 1440p (1080 will obviously be relevant longer), get whichever Aftermarket card you like the most.

I would recommend going for the GTX 1070 in about a month... Wait a second for mining to cool down, and grab a new one. Especially when you are not on a budget, don't buy used!

The GTX 1080 is for 4K, and a bit overpowered for 1440p if you ask me...

Thanks a lot for the quick reply everyone :)

Why in a month though ?

Most of what I've heard on on this forum seems to be 1070 1440p/144Hz gaming.

Not even an overclocked 1080 Ti does 1440p 144 FPS in many AAA games. I think of a GTX 1070 as being 60 - 120 FPS with max settings in most all graphically-intensive games. Some games need some settings reduced to get good FPS on my GTX 1070 system.

A GTX 1080 Ti struggles to get 60 FPS in many AAA games at 4K. I have a GTX 1070 and play a lot of graphically-intensive games, and I could definitely make use of a GTX 1080's added performance. Just depends on which games a person plays, and what FPS they want to be getting. Also, whether they have DDR4 RAM or not makes a difference. I have an i7 2600K @ 4.6 Ghz with DDR3 RAM, so I don't get as much performance out of my GTX 1070 as somebody with an i7 Skylake or newer CPU does from theirs. I think that getting a GTX 1080 could let me get more performance without needing to upgrade my entire system, which I'll likely do in a year or two.

GTX 1080TI i have one at 1440p gaming 144hz and its great. The lowest FPS ive seen from all the high end AAA games i play is Ghost Recon Wildlands and thats at 60FPS at ultra details and that usually goes between 60 to 80 fps. Its a great card.

1070 from a 780 in SLI wouldn't be much of an upgrade... I would recommend a 1080. Especially with ethereium miners atm the 1080 being 25% faster is the deal over the 1070 imo, especially with HBM2 looking like the future, the increased bandwidth of GDDR5X of the 1080 may prove important in the coming years.

My 1080 maxes (like turning every slider possible to the right) every game I've tried at 1440p while barely dropping below 60 like ever. I've done Doom 2016, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Witcher 3 (hairworks only on Geralt with 4xAA), Shadow of Mordor, and Fallout 4.
