You only need OS support and drivers, which depend on what you're using. If you have W7 installed, it should be good to go.

I have an old laptop that can only see and connect to 2.4ghz. It is running a x32 only processor(don't think this matters, but thought i would mention it). I want to be able to scan my network with it, but i can't see the devices connected to 5ghz. I was wondering if the wireless card was all that was holding it back? If so could switch it out with a wireless card from a computer that I know was able to connect to 5ghz, and connect/ see the 5ghz network?

Get a USB WiFi receiver with 5Ghz support, instead of trying to change the card.

as @ErrantNyles said get a USB dongle rather than a card, as the card will be a pain in the arse to change as it would possibly include changing the receivers, because they might not support 5GHz, which are normally just above the screen, which is a pig of a job to do at times without breaking anything, and a USB dongle would work just as good
